Lee21490
Will be the first cage i've ever built, Bro-Inlaw will be welding everything for me & has made his own cage before on a toyota. Been searching around for exo-cage builds, havent found too much. Wondering what other people have done for theirs, Any advice? Not too worried about rolling it, Just need some protection from tree's.
Pete M
design ideas? or attachment pointers? what exactly are you looking for?
neohic
Find yourself as many toilet paper and paper towel tubes for making angle templates at your tube intersections. Way easier to screw up those and throw them away rather than a pile of expensive tube. I'd use DOM for at least your main hoops/overhead pieces and HREW for everything else. Again, all in the interest of saving some cash while still keeping things safer.
Lee21490
design ideas? or attachment pointers? what exactly are you looking for? A little of both i guess. Was thinking something like the front of that White XJ Not sure how i'll tie the rear in. Bro-inlaw can get 1 1/4" Tubing for cost from his work, but still would rather not waste money.
89eliminator
1 1/4 is pretty small. Most go with 1 1/2 or 1 3/4.
Pete M
1-1/4 will do well against trees, and it'll certainly help in the event of a rollover of you created a whole cage, but you won't have roll-down-the-grand-canyon levels of strength. It's exactly what I'm intending to use on my uncle's XJ for tree protection. don't forget that your frame is just sheetmetal and you'll need to create tie-in plates to spread out the loads. and the plates can't have any sharp corners either or it'll create stress points and defeat the whole purpose. . I currently have Nates4x4 rock sliders on my jeep, I think i'll tie the cage into that. Would the 8 bolts + Pinch seam clamps be strong enough to hold the cage also? Or should i weld in some extra supports on it? Most of the wheeling around here is in dense tree's, Not very many places where i could actually roll down a hill. Thats why i was thinking 1 1/
xjrev10
1 1/4 will look small on the jeep. The pinch seam is strong. I'm not familiar with how the Nates 4x4 sliders are but I would hope they have 3 frame tie ins. I would use them as a base if that is the case.
