It all began when I decided I should clean that pesky 10 pin lighting connector near the airbox.

It wasn't there. It was jammed between the header panel and body.

Okay, I'll loosen it up. Didn't work. Ended up removing the header panel, found there were no upper radiator mounts and only one locating grommet at the bottom. Had that stuff in my stash.

So, decided to drain the cooling system and eliminate the HCV, install the proper temp sender for the gauge cluster I'm gonna use.

Removed the E-fan and verified it works. Repaired the wiring to the radiator fan switch and E-fan. Made sure the relay worked.

Scrounged up the used replacements for some headlight bezels and running lights. Also the little plastic clips for the header panel that the grill screws go into.

That's about 1/2 what I actually did.

Oh, and the distributor had no gasket under it allowing oil to puke all over. Notice the puddle?

Last night I did nothing but look over wiring diagrams as I still have no headlights.

Made notes. I will have a pin-out of the lighting connector to share when I'm done....

Here's one I found somewhere for the headlight switch and then added color codes to it.

Note: My penmanship sucks...

I'm thinking the engine is trashed. Gonna pull the good running one from my 89 parts XJ tomorrow just in case.

Meanwhile, the trudging continues. One bite at a time.

Engine is fine. #2 injector was stuck and in the process of unsticking it, I thought the engine was trashed. Probably had something to do with me zapping #2 injector with 12 volts while the engine was running. Lots of progress made over the weekend.

Radiator neck is loose or I'd be driving it. I'll throw a spare radiator into it and swap out the noisy alternator and idler pulley.

Oh, and the huge "rear main seal" leak was due to there being no gasket under the distributor. I put an o-ring under it. No more pumping oil out like a Texas oil well at idle.

I was fortunate enough to have an instrument cluster with gauges, so I swapped that in along with the correct senders from my stash.

  • 4 weeks later...

I Offered him 500.00, he came back at 800.00. It has a recently rebuilt auto trans, pretty straight, has the lower dash panel off looks like he was tracing wires. I'ts 2wd if I get I'll do the swap to 4wd.

Is the panel missing or just removed?

I part out XJs so I generally have what you need to go 4wd.

The panel is just removed, the wiring looked like a rats nest. He had so much stuff in the cab it was hard to get a good look at the wiring to see if any of it was cut up. I've seen your craigslist ads, did' nt know for sure if that was your ad at first. Saw your white MJ in the backgroynd of one of the ads. I' m going to let this guy think over my offer for a few days, it's not advertised for sale so it is'nt going anywhere. I'll let you know when I start seaching fot parts.

Short bed, auto, 4.0, He said it ran well up until the time it just quit. Said he put in a new CPS but it did'nt help. My two MJ's have been so reliable I've hav'nt done much trouble shooting except for the time putting my shortbed back together after my Elk encounter. I did' nt pay attention when I disconnected the starter relay, spent half the day getting that right.
