dboisen Posted April 17, 2015 Share Posted April 17, 2015 I recently purchased an 89 cherokee with the 4.0. I drove it around town for a few days with no problem. On the third day I stopped at the gas station and when I got back in after filling up it would not start. It sounded like it was the battery so I called my brother to give me a jump start. When we jumped it, it started fine and I drove it home. Next day I got a new battery and put it in. This seemed to have solved the problem until about a week later until it did the exact same thing. So yesterday I replaced the alternator and let it run for about 30 minutes. Turned it off and it started up with no problem. I did this several times. This morning I went out and attempted to start it and it wouldn't even crank. I jumped it and got it to crank and not start. I have not checked for spark and fuel yet but will do so soon. Any advice on either of these problems would be great. It also appears that the previous owner was having similar trouble because the starter solenoid relay has been replaced. Sounds like it could be a short as well. After everything said and done, when truck is off and lights everything is off, use a meter to check for battery drain. Make sure your coil is doing its job, seen coils have low power and still make spark. If no spark then you have narrowed it down, if good spark then could be timing issue or fuel related. Indexing distributor in cruisers tips is always a good idea. Fuel area make sure fuel is getting in their, low fuel pressure can cause no start. I once had the fuel pickup hose in tank crack and pump fuel up and drop right back in to tank. Make sure you pump is pumping, make sure your pressure valve is work on your fuel rail. and last fuel filter is not clogged. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Megadan Posted April 17, 2015 Share Posted April 17, 2015 I'm wondering if the starter isn't shorting inside the motor. If it's shorting with the body of the starter it could cause many of these symptoms. Definitely go over the electrical system with Cruisers tips.
