NHMJXJ
Once again, couldn't decide if this would be better in the Pub, or MJ Tech. As it's not an MJ, but an XJ, I've posted here. I've found another XJ that has my interest. It's a 4 owner vehicle with a detailed history. I've pasted a segment of the CarFax report below and need some expert feedback on what it's really saying. The following history is from June 2013 through March 2015. Only about 8K miles put on it in that time, but it appears as though everything was replaced. Of particular interest, what do they mean when they write "Long block replaced"? 06/10/2013 Washington Motor Vehicle Dept. Wiggilez
I believe it means, the block or top and bottom end were replaced, but much of the internal like oil pump, water pump other, were from the previous engine. don't quote me though, i've been proven wrong more then once about jeep things :P
jimoshel
A short block is just the block and all internal parts. No head. A Long block includes the head. and may or may not include the valve cover(s).
johnj92131
Jim has it right! Long block is head plus a short block.
NHMJXJ
So, with that snap shot of the Carfax, what would your opinion be on longevity of the motor/drivetrain?
jimoshel
Don't abuse it, it will last longer than you will.
Minuit
It either has a new/remanufactured motor or one from a junkyard(probably a new/reman). In either case if it drives ok and sounds ok it wouldn't be anything I would be worried about. What year is it?
NHMJXJ
Overall it looks pretty good (in pictures). It's a '98 2 door. Has nearly everything I want. Only problem is the distance. 2543 miles away. Pictures can tell you a lot, but there's no telling when it comes to mechanical issues. Anyone in Seattle willing to take a look at it for me?
