jimoshel Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 You should have it like new in two or three days. Welll, maybe a week. Actually the 2.8 is not all that bad of an engine. Don't expect to much from it and don't push it. I have a '86 with the 2.8, 5speed and 95,000 when I got it.At 115K it started smoking so bad I parked it. Was going to drop a 2.5 into it and found a wrecked S10 with a low mileage, good running 2.8 so I just went with it.Good luck. Jim
neohic Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Looks like a ford 8.8? Good bad? Old one had a 44. That's a Chrysler 8.25 out of a Cherokee. Looks like whoever put it under there didn't move the spring perches either putting lots of stress on the leaf spring bushings. :ack:
MEmanchie Posted April 7, 2015 Author Posted April 7, 2015 The picture showing the broken leafs shows the perch on top of the axle. But is the 8.25 bad? I'd like to get it going then build it better as I go, but anything that doesn't seem capable wheeling I'd like to get out of the way like I'm thinking with the whole vacume actuated transfercase, don't trust it..
ggcnash Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 8.25 is a great axle some say just as tough as the 44 don't change it.
ggcnash Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Pull the rear disc setup off a liberty (03-07) I think those years are correct easy disc brake upgrade for the 8.25
MEmanchie Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 Pull the rear disc setup off a liberty (03-07) I think those years are correct easy disc brake upgrade for the 8.25 That's a great thing to know! Thanks I'll look into doing that
MEmanchie Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 I was pricing out long arm kits today and the rough country one says it doesn't fit with the 2.8v6 or diesel motors. Any idea why that'd be? Or know which kits work?

Strokermjcomanche Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I believe it's because where the crossmember is located on the frame .
MEmanchie Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 I believe it's because where the crossmember is located on the frame . Oh yeah I guess it is 5 inches forward with a 2.8, guess I should had done a little more research before but in, didn't know an 86 would be such a black sheep. Iv been searching everywhere trying to find a post where some one with a 2.8 xj or mj installed long arms. Seems most swap to 4.0 before..
WiscoXJ Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I never even considered flipping the shock mounts like you did.. seems like it worked just fine but wouldn't it severely limit uptravel?
MEmanchie Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 I never even considered flipping the shock mounts like you did.. seems like it worked just fine but wouldn't it severely limit uptravel? yeah I'm sure they would, I'm going to mount some down on the axle. The guy I got it from did the SOA, I would at least turn them and swap them from side to side to get the shocks on the front of the axle. How he put them has the shocks at like 45 degree angles back.
