Engine Torsion dampening shock!

Okay I've seen threads about the torsion dampner on engine to frame on the 2.5. My ? Is there a replacement or a alternative to the oem 1 that use to be in oem stock and may not now.? I am going to replace the motor mounts 1 day and thought this little device probably is pretty worn. Thanks.

These shock dampers have been non-available for years. They were only used on the 86-90 2.5L models, and not installed on the 91 and up models except for some exports. The part number is 83500358. I think you're SOL.................

Hornbrod, thanks ...Well I will figure out somthing then. I figured this might be a obstacle but no biggy..I had heard later models didn't have it.

Lol, when I first saw it I was like what the crap is that! I've had just 10 jeeps or better and hadn't seen 1 of them but I had 90 models mostly and only 1 other 2.5 wrangler.

I removed mine when i did my MPI swap,but not sure what i did with it.

 

You can buy a generic one and adapt it as there are aftermarket ones available for race cars,Google engine torque damper and you should find some.

I don't know about the 2.5, but they did vibrate a lot for me on the stroker. I even used their "soft" model. Replaced them with a set of NOS Mopar mounts - perfect. Do some searching - there's a lot of folks who have been disappointed with the BD mounts and junked them.

I made the equivalent of Brown dogs for mine,my old TBI vibrated pretty bad,quite a bit worse them my brothers 4.0l does with them,my MPI seems to run a bit smoother so it doesnt seem as bad.

 

My truck isnt a daily driver anymore so i don't mind it too much,it would have drove me nuts when i was commuting 90 miles a day in the MJ.

Yeah. The shock damper would be meaningless with Brown Dogs because there's no damping allowed using them. The whole truck will vibrate instead of just the engine. Brown Dogs - never again.

I've got some many rattles............

 

Guess I figure that rattles mean the $#!& hasn't fallen off yet......lol

I have not installed them yet, I expect some vibration.

 

I have replaced the engine mount and trans mounts and still the torque rattles the tail pipe against the x-member............Anchor brand. BDs will solve that problem.

 

Yes, the BD mounts should solve the tail pipe rattle because the engine can't move much. Then the engine vibes will be transferred throughout the body. BD mounts are great for offroad, but not for a driver.

I've been looking at these for a few months. The reason is it helps apply more of the engine torque to the wheels. When you launch, the engine (and drive train) will tilt. It will tilt before any power gets to the ground. So, the engines power will first tilt the engine, then spin the shafts, and then spin the tires. Causing a delay launch. This is one reason drag cars run solid motor mounts. And old school racers would use a chain, one end on frame, and other bolted on engine. To prevent loss of "off the line torque". I used a wire cable in my HEMI (wire rope is lighter the chain). The off the line launch improved.

 

With a shock like this, you get the benefit of instant torque and flexibility of motor mounts. And the shock has give, so less chance of breaking stuff.

 

I'm kinda surprised jeep or any stock car implemented this. I wonder what they wore trying to solve? Wore they only on the 2.5 manuals? I could see that, to soften shifts, and lessen the strain on the mounts.

 

The reason I've been wanting to do this is different, again its for drag racing, Sand drags. I could see something like this helping someone with a manual and low gears too.

Yeah, because the 2.5L puts out so much more torque than the 4.0L. :)

 

I always assumed they used the damper to reduce vibration, and I always wondered how necessary it is. I didn't know Chrysler eliminated it on the later models. Knowing that, I would either leave the old one in place, or just eliminate it.
