wombat
The craigs list add is expired.. whats the price?
JHS
Jeepmj_tj thanks for the pictures, I've seen those before on xjs. Defiantly a good idea. With a CNC plasma table in the works I'm sure they wouldn't be too hard or expensive ;) Wombat, check the link in my signature, I've updated bumper prices on my site. I also am only offering them in primer. Packaging with the paint has been costly. Thanks for the interest!
Incommando
I wouldn't mind some tailight protection. Tailight prices are outrageous.
wombat
need to modify your front bumper to except an 8274 warn, and lower your price by 100 bucks unless shipping is free....
Brickmiata
Potential to do some custom front frame rail plating? I have a plow on the front of my mj and would like to plate the front back to the firewall at least
JHS
I'd do a run of font plates, possibly some uni rail plates similar to the ones available for the xj, but more specific to the mj. I plated my xj before I built it, defiantly worth it in the long run. Wombat, never had my hands on one of those winches. Not sure what it would take to fit. The ones I've sold guys are typically mounting m8000 or similar. Comparably, my bumpers shipped price is in line with others, with the exception that mine have many features already built into them, full length frame plates, unibody tie ins etc. They weight in at 120-140 pounds. Its allot of beef! Lol
JHS
Incommando, mine have a small crack, I'm afraid to look at what they cost! I'd probably do a run with light guards and without
dscowell
Make a build thread and you can keep us all updated there with all your new stuff as you put it on your MJ. As well as when you go on trips everyone here likes pictures.

Incommando
Wombat what prevents the 8274 from being mounted as it shares the same 10x4.5 mounting pattern as almost every other winch out there? Even if it won't mount I would not worry too much about it not fitting that bumper: the 8274 is a fine winch but at $2,000 I rarely see them and I would bet you would be hard pressed to find even a dozen members with one mounted up. There is not enough market to warrant changing a design when you probably will never sell one for an 8274 user, anyway. The basic m8000 design winch made by so many probably outsells the 8274 by at least 50:1. As I said earlier: the bumper price is inline with other good bumpers. We are a funny lot. We B*&^h & moan that no one makes parts for our very small market and then we B*&^h & moan when someone does. Remember the rear bumper debacle a few years ago? The B*&^hing & moaning is partially responsible for killing that. I am 90% sure I will order a set of MJ ROCKers when they come out. Thanks for keeping us in mind
JHS
I appreciate that Incommando, Looking forward to building a rear bumper and the ROCKers! (and getting my MJ project on the chopping block) Ill start a new thread in the forums to try and cover my build pretty thoroughly -Joe
wombat
the 8274-50 is 2000bucks. the 8274 is probably the most used, and most reliable winch ever made. Do some research. The winch is also a forward mounting winch, not a bottom mount like mostly every other winch made. The reason not many people run them is because its hard to find bumpers that you can mount them to. Incommando
Thanks for the info about the mounting style. I was familiar with the rep of the 8274 but not the uncommon mounting style. The fact that not many people run them is wjy I questioned the necessity of changing anything to accommodate them. But it is not my company. JHS
Just a point from my stand point, build a bumper for $100 less then I do for a winch 3x the cost of most common made is US warns. I just don't see how I could make it work.
wombat
JHS the winch does not cost that much. what you are looking at are the 2nd gen winch's. To say that there are not many people running them is ignorance, and you obviously don't know very many wheelers. But that has nothing to do with this thread. I do think that the bumper is a nice piece. Not taking anything away from it at all. But I do think the price is a bit inflated. There are alot of options out there for XJ/ MJ bumpers. Many of which I would pick over this one simply because of price/ shipping.
JHS
Ive read about and heard about the 8274, all good things (40+ year life expectancy, etc.), but Ive never actually seen one. Ive been to allot of wheeling events, but I just haven't seen them Shipping is killing me. I have gotten quotes as high as $250... I had an idea the other night to try using Uship and have smaller shipping companies give me bids. JCR sells their vangaurd at $740 shipped. Many others are less, but I find JCRs stuff to be high quality. at a price of $560 I have about $100 in steel, say $10 in welding gases and wire, $20 in electricity, $25 in grinding/cutting/drilling/plasma consumables and $25 in hardware. Plus my time building one, roughly 8-10 hours. not including time spent building the Jigs and fixtures. So at $180 in physical costs, that makes my labor worth about $42/hr. Which isn't very good considering Rent / Insurance etc. Its a totally different topic, but being in business for myself has really shown me how discouraging it is to start your own business. Politicians claim to want to help the little guys, but the amount of hoops you have to jump through (esp. in Massachusetts) are crazy. Not to mention fees and taxes and permits etc. Heath care is another thing just making me not want to get up and work for myself. I just wonder why anyone would want to go into business for themselves... Craziness!
MJam86
I love the negative comments on here... My opinion on rear bumper is I'd prefer to have tire in middle or offset to the passenger side. IDK about you LWB folks but for short wheel base the gas tank is on driver side I have about a 1" lean with a full tank and maybe 1/2" with a less than quarter tank. Something to counter balance the weight of gas and my 200 lbs in the driver seat would be nice.
JHS
Thanks, Thats a pretty good point. My thoughts are have tire position as an option to people. I don't think it would be hard to configure different layouts on the Jig.
Tommy
I'm excited to see the rockers, since I already have bumpers. You mentioned shipping. I've wondered how nates4x4 manages to be so cheap. My bumpers from him aren't as nice as your bumpers appear to be. Very basic design. Average welds. Basically a steel square tube with some brackets welded on. But he managed to sell me a front bumper with light bar/grille guard for 220 shipped. Based on pictures I'd rather have your bumper and I'm not trying to advertise for nates, but I wonder what he's doing that allows him to ship so cheaply? JHS
Tommy, Ive been trying to figure out the same thing! My only guess is maybe volume shipping gets reduced rates. I tried to pitch UPS and Fed Ex but to no avail. They also said the 150# was just too heavy for them. I will keep trying!

So.... :dunno: I also cannot find any pics of you using an 8274 especially on your 2wd MJ. Can you post some please? If the market was there the bumpers would be there. By Warns own figure the only model of the 8274 sold new is not one of their most popular. The average internet selling prices is around $2k with some higher and some lower. http://www.4wd.com/Jeep-Winches-Jeep-Winch-Accessories/M8274-50-Self-Recovery-Winch.aspx?t_c=18&t_s=300&t_pt=100702&t_pn=WAR38631&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping&emlprox=out&ppcfon=1&gp=1&gclid=Cj0KEQiA1NWnBRDchObfnYrbo78BEiQA-2jqBa6_Xg2LQQn6ctP5fpkz6_KRp1f8Bva7SM0CkQD_V4MaAvcG8P8HAQ I am not talking about craigslist price or the like for a 30 year old winch that will be good after rebuilding. It is a fine winch but it is far outsold by the more conventional type put out by many companies. Remember that small market thing and running off vendors? If someone is willing to step up and help us out and you don't want their product it would be an aid to the rest of us if you just moved on to the product you do want from another vendor. We have had so many problems getting products for our trucks.

Worked on the ROCKers today, took some time in the backhoe to dig it out, but its finally above freezing in MA so the snow is actually melting!
