88whitemanche
So I got a question for all the gear heads.... What brand gears should I get for the 4.88 gear swap? And does cj ring and pinion fit this axle??? Any info/advice helps a lot since I'm going to hopefully buy at the end of the year the parts nessacery for regear... http://m.summitracing.com/search/part-type/ring-and-pinion-gears/axle-model/amc-model-20/ring-and-pinion-ratio/4-88-1 http://www.jeep4x4center.com/precision-gear-amc-20-4-88-all-amc488.html http://www.ox-usa.com/amc-20/286-ring-pinion-411.html

Incommando
All of the interior differential stuff like lockers & gears are the same for both versions. The difference is the axle shaft & tubes. So anything like that for a CJ differential will work for you. It seems like gears are usually a get what you pay for thing. Most companies have two different lines of them. The good ones are sold under one name and are more expensive but are quiet. The cheap ones are sold under another and are generally more noisy. I have read, but have no confirmation, that USA Standard gear sets are the Yukon gears that are out of spec for the top line so they sell them off without the "pretty up" final process. We put USA Standard gears in the XJ owned by the guy who helps me on my Jeep. They are not noisy and have held up well over 20,000 miles. Well, you can't hear them over the KM1's, anyway. The "noisy" thing may be a crap shoot.

The "noisy" thing may be a crap shoot. Ive read that too, not sure I buy it. Gears for alot of axles are outsourced and most of our Jeep axles are one of those, most major gear companies gears come out of the same factory in Korea and are pretty much identical. They look the same, setup the same, run quiet, even have identical numbers and symbols stamped in them, and in the case of Yukon/USA std have word for word identical warranties. mnkyboy
Genuine Yukon vs. Cheap gears, both D30. You will notice a circled K symbol, most Korean sets have it.
mnkyboy
US made USA std D44 gears, and some Korean Yukon 8.25 gears.

Incommando
Thanks for the gear info. Looks like what you buy and what you get can be a bit iffy. Buying cheap may be a heck of a bargain in this case. We both have had luck with the USA standard. Good to know for the future.
mnkyboy
I typically go USA std on my personal rigs but we will install whatever flavor the customer wants.
mnkyboy
For anyone wondering what really happens to a Yukon set thats not suitable to be sold as a Yukon. they get put in a plain white box and sold as used or blemished and discounted. 88whitemanche
Usa standard it is!!!! Lol And where do you get those non suitable gears?
mnkyboy
Usually you contact Yukon and see what they have in the scratch and dent pile, I've seen people get great deals on lockers that way too.
88whitemanche
Ok so saw this ad for amc 20 axle shafts... I highly doubt I need them but it always good to have spares just in case....does this kit fit the comanche amc 20? http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/pts/4956551210.html
shelbyluvv
A narrow track is about 50.5" wide where your MJ 20 is almost 61". They won't work.
Incommando
All AMC 20's are not the same
dasbulliwagen
The axle shafts advertised are to replace the original failure prone 2 piece shafts as found in the CJ's. The MJ 20 already has one piece shafts so its not an issue.
88whitemanche
Thanks fellas... I wasn't trying to get the kit for the 1pce design I wanted the shafts for if I ever bust my shafts...plus I could've haggled for a super cheap low ball price for brand new shafts.... outlaw star
The other problem with using CJ shafts is the AMC 20 came in a wide track and narrow track.
Incommando
and two different widths for the FSj's and a width for the MJ...so at least 5 different widths think? 3 different lug bolt mounting patterns?
outlaw star
Never crossed my mind about the FSJs. Good call.
