dj5
89 eliminator 2wd manual swbthe tach is under (EDIT: 0 rpm) when idling but when I gas it, the rpms do go up, I just don't know how accurate it is.anyone know what would cause this? just to let some background info, speedo and odometer don't work either but all other gauges do. jimoshel
Tach should be under 1K when idling, around 550 RPM, then increase when additional fuel is introduced to the engine. Check the speedo cable and see if it is OK.
dj5
sorry meant to say the tach is under 0 when idling :dunce:
big66440
Wanna trade? my tachs reading too high :rotf: , jimoshel is right on about the speedo cable, my odometer wasn't working at all so I couldn't insure it because my smog checks showed the same mileage for years once I installed a new speedo cable the odometer started working. BTW did it just start doing that out of no where?

dj5
needed a new cluster for speedo and a speedo cable.new tach in cluster still reads under 0 when idling :dunno: anybody know what I should look for? maybe a sensor? :???:
jimoshel
Go to the ignition module and check for output from the tach terminal. More than likely it's a dirty or loose connection between the tach output terminal and the gauge cluster.
dj5
I already put a new ignition module and the cluster has no corrosion at all, I just got it... :wall: idk what to look for next
big66440
See if there is a local gauge cluster rebuild/ repair shop in your area I'm more than sure they can calibrate it for you very cheaply.
dj5
alright, ill checkback when I was trying to wire a Sonoma with a tach, a lot of shops in my area wouldn't touch it saying they didn't have the know-how or simply said they won't touch a tach you don't buy from them....weird being it was pretty simple to do
Eagle
Tach should be under 1K when idling, around 550 RPM, then increase when additional fuel is introduced to the engine. Check the speedo cable and see if it is OK. Correction -- should be around 750 RPM for a Renix 4.0L
big66440
You can also take the cluster apart and pulling the tachometer off the cluster, there will be a white plastic phillips screw right were the circuitry is you can try to adjust it yourself but it is a time consuming trial and error PITA to deal with and it doesn't guarantee there isn't an issue with the motor or circuitry,I know it's frustrating I'm in the same situation myself let me know if you have any luck and I might try what you try to see if mine starts working. Eagle
Man, you're brave. The thought of trying to pull a gauge needle off and reinstall it scares me right out of my shoes.

Does this mean you were able to change the needle orientation on yours? Have to checked it against a diagnostic tachometer to verify that it's reading correctly now?
