89 eliminator 2wd manual swb

the tach is under (EDIT:  0 rpm) when idling but when I gas it, the rpms do go up, I just don't know how accurate it is.
anyone know what would cause this?

just to let some background info, speedo and odometer don't work either but all other gauges do.

Tach should be under 1K when idling, around 550 RPM, then increase when additional fuel is introduced to the engine. Check the speedo cable and see if it is OK.

Wanna trade? my tachs reading too high :rotf: , jimoshel is right on about the speedo cable, my odometer wasn't working at all so I couldn't insure it because my smog checks showed the same mileage for years once I installed a new speedo cable the odometer started working.

BTW did it just start doing that out of no where?

no I bought it recently and been fixin it up, just weird to me the tach sits under 0 when I start it but when I gas it, it does rev up but still idles under the 0  .... as for the speedo, I will check the cable.

needed a new cluster for speedo and a speedo cable.
new tach in cluster still reads under 0 when idling :dunno:

anybody know what I should look for? maybe a sensor? :???:

Go to the ignition module and check for output from the tach terminal. More than likely it's a dirty or loose connection between the tach output terminal and the gauge cluster.

I already put a new ignition module and the cluster has no corrosion at all, I just got it...

:wall:

idk what to look for next

alright, ill check
back when I was trying to wire a Sonoma with a tach, a lot of shops in my area wouldn't touch it saying they didn't have the know-how or simply said they won't touch a tach you don't buy from them....weird being it was pretty simple to do

Correction -- should be around 750 RPM for a Renix 4.0L

You can also take the cluster apart and pulling the tachometer off the cluster, there will be a white plastic phillips screw right were the circuitry is you can try to adjust it yourself but it is a time consuming trial and error PITA to deal with and it doesn't guarantee there isn't an issue with the motor or circuitry,I know it's frustrating I'm in the same situation myself let me know if you have any luck and I might try what you try to see if mine starts working.

when vehicle is off, should tach sit at 0? mine sits under...thinking maybe that's it considering my xj sits at 0 when off but my xj is not renix

update: fix

to fix the issue if you have your temp gauge or tach or whatever gauge for that matter sitting at a number other than 0 when truck is on but not started.

keep key in on position
take glass off of front of gauge cluster while all wires connected to vehicle.
carefully with pliers pull off the needle and push back on in desired direction
turn off key and replace glass

hope this helps someone in need

Man, you're brave. The thought of trying to pull a gauge needle off and reinstall it scares me right out of my shoes.

Hell yeah, man. I'm glad I found this, definitely gonna try it.

Pulling the needle is 50% likelihood of breakage.
Youve been warned!

Oh thank you! I’m glad I’m on the other half of that statistic, successful removal and installation!

Does this mean you were able to change the needle orientation on yours? Have to checked it against a diagnostic tachometer to verify that it's reading correctly now?

Yes, absolutely! Thank you for asking!
