Aradian Posted October 19, 2014 Share Posted October 19, 2014 Hello everyone! I am the newest owner of a 1988 Comanche Pioneer 4x4. I lurked around this forum for almost a week before finally buying it and I have to say thank you to everyone for helping me make my decision. I recently had to give up my 69 Karmann Ghia (unwillingly, I assure you), so I wanted to pick something unique. I will post pics once I figure out how to do so. Didn't want to, kinda had to. I'd love to see pictures of it! Also, where at in NC? I'm near Charlotte, and many other members are scattered around the state. Aradian Posted October 19, 2014 Author Share Posted October 19, 2014 I found out that my Ghia was originally yellow, but was painted red about 10 years ago. In a lot of ways, that engine was easy to work on yes. I'm sad to see it go. But, I'm very excited to have the MJ. I've never had a truck, or a Jeep, or anything with 4wd before. I had a 72 exactly like yours back in the early 90's, and then a 73 Ghia vert in the early 2000's. Last VW's I had were a slammed 68 Beetle, and a slammed built to the hilt 59 Microbus. Wish I never sold that bus, but Oh well. Also.... I named my daughter Ghia. She turns 6 tommorow. Welcome to the club, and don't be afraid to ask ANY question. I've read the other threads about it though and determined that it's either the ground (but wouldn't that make other things not work?), the switch, or the bulbs (how likely is it for ALL of them to go out?) gogmorgo Posted October 21, 2014 Share Posted October 21, 2014 The headlight &c switch on the dash can be problematic sometimes. The coil for the rheostat (i.e. dash light dimmer) can get bunched up and develop dead spots, among other things. Have you tried turning the knob to see what happens? Having all the bulbs go out is unlikely, but not unheard of, although it wouldn't have happened all at once. Think of the neglectful owner who doesn't notice that one bulb is out, or doesn't known how to change it and doesn't want to pay someone else to do so. One bulb out becomes two, two becomes three, three becomes all of them. My parents have let this happen in their vehicles. But before you start tearing into things, have you checked all your fuses? Aradian Posted October 21, 2014 Author Share Posted October 21, 2014 The first thing i do when i get a car is give it a personal checkup, that includes examining every fuse. None of them are blown but a few looked pretty old and might be corroded. The past two cars i've had used a similar type of switch, when i noticed the dash lights werent comming on, i turned the knob both ways and nothing happened.
