Another Does Size/Connection(s) Matter? Question - Vacuum

Recommended Posts

Yeah,  not really trying to start a theme with my posts.... but have noticed as the weather has started to change many of us are

dealing with Heat-A/C issues and many appear to be vacuum canister related.

In the rebuilding of my latest MJ,  the vacuum canister was one of the missing items.

My solution thus fare was grab a small Vacuum Ball from the Jeep parts bin/cabinet in the garage which is the size of....a large grapefuit.

But normally I think  the MJs and XJs had a somewhat larger canister behind the bumper on the passenger side.

I've also wonder about the newer canisters....

Since mine was MIA.  I've also relocated the ball up into the engine compartment just to make it easier regarding

routing vacuum hoses etc.

Does the SIZE on these things matter or make a difference and is there really a WRONG way to connect to the things?

Thanks in advance.

My MJ has a grapefruit. I have no cruise.

My XJ has a football, it has cruise.

The only "trick" to installing it is...the fat hose goes to the port that says "vac".

The skinny hose in the other port on the grapefruit.

On the football there is a set of ports on each end, the fat hose has a T in it that goes to either end.  I had always thought the other end went to cruise...but not sure since others have said they have cruise and a grapefruit.

I don't think size matters too much (in this case  ). I installed a small cannister from a Porsche in the engine compartment and got rid of the football behind the bumper. The cruise and the rest of the vacuum controls work just as well with the smaller reservoir as it did before.

  • 2 years later...

I want to put in a grapefruit reservoir, but there are multiple ports on it compared to my singular port football. Should I plug up the unnecessary ports on the grapefruit reservoir if I get one?

Edit****

Or I can get a Dorman 47077 canister and call it a day?

the larger can hold more "vacuum action" than the small one, that`s all...

The round ball has one chamber.  The football shaped ball has two chambers, separated from each other by a "wall" in the middle.  Thus the vac ports on either end.  I don't know what the thinking was when they moved to the football shaped one.  I would think that one side was dedicated to cruise and the other to HVAC.

My football only has one port but my MJ didn't have cruise from the factory - interesting. I wonder If I can get away with the round ball with one port now that I installed factory cruise...

I had cruise on my 91 for years using the round factory canister - no problems ever. But I didn't use cruise all that much either. As long as your vacuum system is free of leaks and the check valves work properly you will be fine.
