Spectormj Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 My truck ain't passing MARTA cause of an exhaust leak What's the best way to fix it and change up from factory exhaust
benjy_26 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Where is it leaking from? As far as the exhaust, I'm running a 2.25" downpipe into a 2.5" Magnaflow glasspack, then into a full case Magnaflow muffler with a dump prior to my rear axle. It sounds great (to me), is quiet at cruising speeds, and it feels like I picked up some power in the bargain over the stock, rusted out set up.
Spectormj Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 I wish i had a video to post of it to figure it out I'm guessing either the gasket or somewhere on the set itself
dasbulliwagen Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Is yours a 2.5 or a 2.8? In the case of the 2.5, it could be a cracked manifold, or it could have broken manifold bolts, usually at each end that would cause a gasket leak. If the bolts arent broken now, they will probably break when you pull the manifold to check for cracks. There is a factory TSB on these with a new part number bolt/stud and a plastic sleeve. The 2.5 also has EGR so its possible the tube is rotted out also. I have no experience with the 2.8, so I can't tell you what to look for there. Good luck and let us know what you find!
dasbulliwagen Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I'm not sure anyone on here had had a 2.8 stay together long enough to get an exhaust leak.
86FUBAR Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I'm not sure anyone on here had had a 2.8 stay together long enough to get an exhaust leak.Mine stayed together for years ! Right up to the day I yanked it out :) I was plagued with leaks when I first acquired my manch but mine was just the collector flange gasket that kept needing to be retightened
HOrnbrod Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I'm not sure anyone on here had had a 2.8 stay together long enough to get an exhaust leak. I have. My first new vehicle was an 85 S10 with the 2.8 and 700R 4-speed. Bought it in VA, drove it for a year, then got orders to the Philippines. I drove it over and under the local "roads" for 4+ years there, then shipped it back to VA w. about 130K on it. Always did oil/filter every 3K miles, and took good care of it. Except for the usual fender benders that are unavoidable there, I never had any problems with it, ever. Needed something bigger by then and got an XJ, then sold the S10 to a co-worker in VA, and left for a new assignment in Guam. About a month later I go an email from him. The engine had seized on him while cruising down I95. He wasn't happy, but realized shiite happens occasionally. Never had an exhaust leak with the S10 either........
Spectormj Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 how easy would it be to self check the exhaust system??
Eagle Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 how easy would it be to self check the exhaust system?? 3-foot length of 5/8" or 3/4" heater hose. Hold one end to your ear, move the other end around until the noise is loudest. That's your leak.
Spectormj Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 Eagle would i need to jack up the truck or no
Spectormj Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 300 bucks later and no more leak it had broken bolts on the manifold that had to be drilled and rethreaed
88ComancheMitch Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Yuck! I'm glad my bolts came out like butter when I did my header/intake install.
Spectormj Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 I'm still struggleing with the emissions test high hydro carbons
