Dana 30 1 Piece Axle Conversion

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of changing from vac disco two piece axle shaft setup to 1 piece with larger joints from a TJ.

Is there a way to test old used u joints? Should I replace them or use them?

If you recommend replacing which u joints do you recommend?

Replace. They are cheap enough to do them while you are taking the axles out. Other wise you are going to spend a lot of time replacing them down the road when it could have been avoided. Moogs are always a good brand to go to. They can be had a most auto parts stores. Spicer is also good. Get grease able ones if you can. They last longer but cost a few extra bucks.

Whether you use Moog, Federal Mogul, Spicer or any other brand, take the caps off and give them a healthy dose of grease before installing. They are not packed with enough grease to just install as they are in the box.  But YES definitely REPLACE the u-joints it is cheap insurance.

I'd replace them with spicer 297's, or 760's if your not opposed to grinding the inside of the yoke a little to make room for a circle clip.  I would not put more grease in them, if they required more grease, they would come with more grease.

Do not add grease if they are sealed U-joints, they don't have much grease but that is the right amount. Don't think you know better than the guys who make them. I'm referring to Spicer here.

Personally I'd take sealed over greasable U-joints any day.

I'll keep adding grease to my u-joints as I have lost track of how many different joints I have found devoid of any grease in the crosses and just enough in the caps to hold the needle bearings. That goes for sealed or greasable joints.  We'll all do things our own ways.

Based on those two boxes, I'd say Moog and Precision are the same part.

You would be correct they are the same parts both made by Federal Mogul, and the same as Napa u-joints. I believe the "super strengths" are made in the USA
