toid Posted April 7, 2014 Share Posted April 7, 2014 Thinking about tunneling my '90. One of those few things i have never done and haven't studied much on. anybody done one? Anybody seen one done on an MJ? My first MJ... Does the unibody construction mean that the bed-to-cab connection does not "flex" like "standard" pick-up trucks do? If this is the case, the selection of boot material to weather-proof the "tunnel" need not be so particular. Also, would appropriate construction, anchoring, and generous application of truck bed liner preclude having to use a toneau cover? Just fishing for advice. Thanks Rev. dave92cherokee Posted April 7, 2014 Share Posted April 7, 2014 I've done it on an S10 I used to have, the boot material is available from places like leer that sell camper tops as it's commonly used to seal up the window of the camper top to the window of the truck cab. It just presses onto a metal lip but I added some silicone inside it to help make it water tight. Just make sure the seam is on the bottom close to the middle and then seal that to prevent exhaust fumes getting into the cab. As for needing a bed cover it's mainly for deterring thieves, if you build the box then anchor it from inside the box to the bed, and have the box all the way against the front of the bed and seal it up very well then it shouldn't be a problem. You could mount the speaker connection points on the front side of the box so there would be no sign of anything from the bed. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
shelbyluvv Posted April 7, 2014 Share Posted April 7, 2014 I did it to a Rampage once. They are a unibody as well. I found that It was actually stronger than a body on frame. The MJ may be different because the bed and cab are seperate unlike the Rampage is. I have also seen them mounted in a tool box so theives can't see them. I built a custom box that fit behind the passenger side of the Ranger I had in place of the jack. I have since built a new box to fit the Comanche that is not installed yet as I have not gotten to the interior of the truck yet. Bigger is not always better. The interior airspace is right in the middle of the recommended for those subs. It fits like a glove behind the seats. I have had them for a couple years but haven't put them in the truck. toid Posted April 7, 2014 Author Share Posted April 7, 2014 I'm mainly doing it for a showcase. Just opened a pickup oriented upholstery shop. Doing a few custom audio jobs. I did installs for 15+ years but never did a tunnel or walkthrough. I figured it would be a great piece to display my mad skills at tunnels.. assuming I can do develop them. Humbly, I'm really good at what I do and have a considerable reputation. I just never did a job like this. If I'm going to do it I'm going to want it done perfectly.
