Shifter Boot Replacement From Something Else Or Custom?

Recommended Posts

i've been messin around in my MJ today and having no shifter boot in the winter time has been bother in due to cold air comein up through the ripped dust cap i have, i was wondering could i take on out of a ford ranger or a chevy s10, anything that has it mounted straight to the floor and not onto a concole and mount the one without the console to my floor? if not has anyone made their own shifter boots? i need some ideas cause makin one has me stumped,

The factory boot can be bought still, it's the same one used in XJs. I just recently bought one and ended up not needing it but held onto it anyways, I'd be willing to sell it if interested.

But from what you're saying it sounds like you want one that goes to the floor to better seal out air leaks. Can't help you there as most modern vehicles have a console around the shifter. Last thing I saw a bare shifter in with a boot that went to the floor was my J10. Maybe you could find one in an old K10 or something too, but I'm not certain.

some moderns still have a bare shifter with just the boot, my buddy's dad's chevy s10 had one and my buddy's friend's ranger has one, i've even tried slappin the stock boot on and it just looks weird, tomorrow when the suns up i'll take a picture of what i'm workin with, i'd love to put the console back in and use the boot but i can't due to the shifter hittin the plastic piece that holds the console down, it breaks it everytime,

When I blew a the rear oil seal (in the middle of literally nowhere) on the BA-10 I destroyed all the boots trying to reach the tranny so that I could pour oil down the top of it (it worked!). Anyway When we decided replace the BA-10 with an AX-15 I needed all the shift boots again (mainly just the one in the floor) junk yard buddy pulled one off an Dodge pickup. I forget what Dodge calls it but it looks a hell of a lot like a MJ. Screwed right in. Also if anyone is curious the shifter also interchanges. I was also told that the one off of a XJ with AX-5 or AX-15 would also work but that is unconfirmed.

Whilst bumbling around Lowes the other day i came upon one of these.

flexible-roof-flashing-one-quarter-inch-

Its a pipe boot for chimney pipe or something like that. The metal rim around the bottom is flexible, but holds its shape very well. And the rubber cone is highly flexible as well, but remains upright like in the picture.

Call me a redneck, but i think it would work great in a pinch. I will be trying it for myself pretty soon as a matter of fact.  I have a center console with shifter boot and all, i'm just to lazy to put all that crap back in. Plus there is no carpeting in my truck so it would look kinda funny.

Jegs, summit, quadratec, amazon, ebay, etc. Most any universal should work fine. You could even use the universal and keep your console. Depending on what you get, maybe top off with a custom Crown Royal bag as your upper "shifter boot"
