10strokin
Hi again all, I am having overheating problems with my old 89 Comanche and have decided to do the closed cooling system changeover. I ordered a 3 row radiator with twin fans already for a 93 cherokee, my question is I just changed the water pump a short time ago for the old system. Do I now have to go to a newer style water pump> What about the thermostat housing? I have an overflow tank from a 95 cherokee already to use and I will be getting rid of the valve mess under the old coolant tank and just running lines straight into and out of heater core. Thanks all!
Strokermjcomanche
Water pump is the same , housing is the same also unless you wanted the temp sensor in the thermostat housing. on the renix there located at the drivers side towards the bottom of the block and the 91 and newer are located in the thermostat housing( to my knowledge it doesn't matter )

carnuck
Rad and heater hoses are the difference.
Rockfrog
That's a minor issue to overcome ... I used a 2000 XJ rad in my 88 MJ. The water outlets are all in the same place so just choose which heater hose layout you prefer. I'm using an 89 upper rad hose in my 2000 XJ as well so it's all cross compatible since the hose positons are thw same for the rad as well ... so are the sizes. 10strokin
When you say choose which heater hose layout I want, what are you meaning?
Rockfrog
Retain the stock heater valve, change to the later style heater valve, or eliminate the valve altogether like late model XJ's
jpdriver1
just changed mine over this past weekend --- did away with the heater valve (didn't work anyway), put in a three row CSK, changed the thermostat housing over to the 96+ style (the rad I used did not have the thermo switch bung (had the housing laying around). 87mjdriver
i did this this fall, i went with the late model set up i think its much cleaner looking. i just went to junk yard to get the parts. the heater hoses run right along the valve cover they are one piece formed, and you have to get the water pump extension pipe, it has a curved neck, if i remember right you have to take the pump off to put it on
Rockfrog
You can also just do it with all 5/8" heater hose and a 5/8" hose form.
