So I'm stuck in gear, not sure if 2, 3 or 4, but was driving in 1st when happened. I was leaving a driveway in 4wd (snow and slush) got out of driveway fine and got out of subdivision on to main road where I tried to shift out of 4hi while in 1st before cutting wheels to turn. Bam truck lurched and died. Cranked with clutch in, put shifter in to 1, let out clutch and died. Burned lots of cluth to limp to my parents driveway and am now stuck. Any help appreciated.

My first question is simple.  You say you put it in first gear afterwards.  Does it feel like it is mechanically putting the transmission into first gear?  Or is it just the shifter moving around of it's own accord.  Not only that, but if it was in first gear when this happened, it would still be in first gear if it was stuck.  I say move back to the transfer case side of things.  Start by making sure the linkage isn't broken and operates freely. Visually check it.

What happens is that if you yank hard on the shifter when the clutch is still engaged (even partially), the shift rods inside the tranny pop out of position. Whatever gear was engaged stays engaged, and then if you try to shift into a different gear that one may engage also. That's when things are totally locked up. I have seen this happen with the BA 10/5, I have two AX-15s out in the yard that are both stuck in reverse due to this, and I've even seen it happen to a Borg-Warner T10 transmission (which was basically bullet-proof).

The only fix is to pull the tranny, open it up, and realign the internal shift rods and forks.

Sounds like I'm hoping for transfer case linkage (sounds cheapest). It happened at as a good a place as it could... I had just dropped off first of two deliveries and only had to go 1 block to second delivery and another two blocks to parents driveway so it won't get towed and I could get out of neighborhood of second delivery without having to back up. Then my wife brought me my car, I had to quit delivering but made it back to the store to get clocked out and made it home (straight shot up main road that had been scraped).

Impulse, I may have shifted to second as it happened and have already gotten it out of 4 into 2. I'll have to go to the folks and see about the feel of the shifter, but it very well may have been just the shifter moving around and gears not engaging (that's what I suppose since I drove it with the stick in neutral). I'll check the transfer case linkage tomorrow, I've already put in for a day off at the full time so I can try to figure out what's going on and already had tomorrow night requested off from the part time pizza gig so I'll have all day to mess with it.

Eagle, I'd be kinda nervous getting in to the transmission, is what you're describing fairly easy or pretty complicated (realigning the shift forks)? Why do you have 2 stuck if it's not too hard?? Not trying to be smart but trying to figure if that's beyond my wrenching skills.

Would this be a good time to try to find a donor to grab a tranny and transfer case (the one with part time 4wd)? I've been thinking how nice that part time 4wd would be for a while now.

Thanks for the help guys!

Based on this more detailed information, I am going to have to heavily lean toward Eagle's diagnosis then.

If you have the resources, then I would say this would be a great time to do an upgrade.

It's not brain surgery, but it does require a FSM for the tranmission, and probably some special tools. I haven't touched the ones I have because they are all 2WD pulls that have no vehicle to go into. I just keep them around for spare parts.

I think this would be an excellent opportunity/excuse for an upgrade, but you won't find a 5-speed mated to a 242 transfer case in a junk yard, because Jeep never sold that combination.

This has been discussed here before. The bottom of the shifter is supposed to be in a cup in the trans. After time and a lot of use there will be some wear between the two parts. If you use too much force on the shifter the bottom will slip out. You are then stuck in whatever gear you were shifting into. The fix is simple. Just unbolt the shifter and lift it up. You will easily see where the bottom part is supposed to go. Just align the two as you lower the shifter back down, replace the bolts and you should be good to go. The bad news is that it will continue to happen if you aren't careful. Fix it and use it for now but plan on having to do some serious work in the spring when the weather is better.

Well, I went over to the parents at 2am after reading Richasco's post, but that wasn't it. I think an easy way to test this without going through pulling the shifter would be to see if reverse lights come on with shifter in R, just to help folks in the future. I did it at 2am because I had a trailer sitting at my father in law's house waiting to pull it the next day and wanted to be sure before going through all that. Thanks for the help though, it was worth a shot.

AX-15 stuck in reverse: pull backup switch out of the case, take a long screwdriver, use it to slide reverse back where it belongs, install shifter, reinstall back up switch...

don't know if it helped anybody but seemed just as good as any to supply a tidbit that might be helpfull.

One other note, if you banging your tranny to get it to go into reverse (clutch working properly), the clock is ticking...for more trouble. (thats how the reverse rail, rod, slider whatever gets bent)
