Well as of now USA is 4th. To illustrate why I don't like the way they score: Belarus is in 7th. Although they only have 6 medals total they have 5 golds and 1 Bronze. Canada is 8th with 4 gold, 9 silver, and 4 bronze for 17 total medals. Belarus may only compete in 7 events but if they win them all they shoot up the rankings while Canada can win medal after medal with many athletes and trail. Can you really say that Belarus has outperformed Canada at this point based on the total results? I can't but that is just my thoughts on it ....

Just in:  Canada 3, USA 2 in womens hockey. USA scores the first two goals, then forgets about offense and starts skating backwards. Right then I knew it was over. Canada scores two goals in the last three minutes of regulation to tie it up and force a sudden death overtime. O/T is more of the same; Canada attacking, USA skating backwards. About eight minutes in, Canada scores - it's over. Canada wins the gold.

WTF do teams go into protect mode when they get the lead? It never works in hockey, football, or anything else. I blame this on the US coaches. Congrats Canada, you guys deserve the gold.

That woman's hockey final left a very dirty floor. Also, British refs suck.

But now we're up to 5th. Three bronze medals behind the Ruskies. If you add in the gold medal we're going to get tomorrow in men's hockey, we'll bump the USA out of second place. ;)

Something that just occurred to me while watching this game: we keep calling it the "Balshoy Ice Dome". "Balshoy" is Russian for "big". So we've given a very fancy name to what they called the "big arena"...

I will never understand this either. Your current style of play got you the lead so you change it?? Asinine. Congrats to the ladies of Canada.

7 NHL teams in Canada compared to 23 in the US. But per capita we have 0.000,000,207 NHL teams compared to your 0.000,000,073,27. Yeah, you may have three times the hockey teams but you also have ten times the population supporting them. And quite a few of your hockey teams can barely support themselves. Last franchise to change countries came our way.

Sure, Gold isn't quite the only thing that counts, but the others only become relevant as tie-breakers.

LOL! With 3 days left I think Team USA has done quite well especially for the Winter competition.

You Americans sure have a funny way of making the standings in your favour...

I happen to agree with that statement. Always have regarding the Olympics. So do all the athletes deep inside. However, it's such a fine line between gold and silver / bronze. Any event that utilizes human judges is inconsistent. Today you might win; tomorrow you might lose depending what some judge had for breakfast or had a hangover. Depending on the event, winning gold or another medal could be a micro-second or a micro-inch. Weather has a huge effect on event results. And so does luck. A good example is the women's hockey game. In the final minute of the USA / Canada game, Canada down 2-1, the Canadian ladies pulled their goalie. A USA player intercepted a pass and took a long off-balance shot at the open net while going down. It hit the goal post and careened left and out. One-half inch to the right and the puck would have been a goal - USA wins the gold.

I still feel gold is what counts most - just pointing out the extremely fine line (and luck) that determines who gets the gold.

Look, I don't want any bad blood between us and our dearest northern Canada MJ buddies.  So you guys cool it.  I love Canada even though they talk funny and use monopoly money to buy their eggs and groceries...I don't want bad blood going here on CC.....So I'm officially changing the Olympic standings to reflect a more natural and objective criteria...because hockey talk will always result in fists thrown.....we don't need that guys!

The new criteria is.....the country with the most beautiful figure skater wins.  There are no objections or appeals allowed.

I officially award South Korea as the winner of the games.  Yuna Kim is like a pure mixture of molten gold and milk chocolate covered strawberries pored over a giant sugar cone of cotton candy dripping stardust and radioactive unobtainium on your fingers.  Look, she's the champ.  We can't compete with that.  Don't even think about it.  We give up.

Second place goes to Austria, because of Anna Fenninger, you thought cheetah clothing was only for the obese southern woman in walmart at 3 am....but you'd be wrong....Cheetah style is back....and its a good thing.  No, she's not a skater but I'm allowed to change the rules as I like,,,,until the Olympic committee gives me grief about it, she stays.  I'd bet she could skate if she had to.

Third place goes to....

well I haven't got that far yet.  Give me a day or two to figure it out.

:dunno:

I was in for good natured ribbing. Like when my comparison of Canada as being as big an enemy as Russia was akin to calling a big guy "Tiny." Again tone, inflection, and facial expression come over poorly on the internet. Had we all been sitting in the same room with a cold beverage in hand that would have been clear. I did not mean to offend anyone with this and apologize if i did so. It was intended in jest and I took the responses in that manner.

:agree: Yup, it's all in jest. Good natured ribbing. At least that's what I've been assuming.  :dunno: And in a couple weeks we'll have all forgotten about it until 2018 comes around.

And continuing in that trend, with the men's curling gold and another in ski cross, we've displaced the US from second place without counting our upcoming hockey gold, which will push us into first again, just like 2010.

About the middle of the second period now and it's Canada up 1-0. Canada has about three times as many shots on goal as the USA, and Quick is stopping most everything so far. If the USA doesn't generate some offense soon, it's going to be a long game........
