TheDirtyJeep401
I'm getting ready to tear down my 304 for my javelin down to a bare block. While ill be waiting on getting the parts I need for it, what are some good ways to store it to keep it from rusting in the cylinder walls? Crank and pistons are not going to be in it. (And this block has not been machined at all) just a simple take apart, get what I need and put it back together. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. gogmorgo
We've got a Honda CBR 600 RR that's been sitting on the work bench completely torn down for the last month. We just lightly coated the cylinder walls with clean motor oil, and left it wrapped in a garbage bag to keep dust off. Admittedly, that's storage indoors in a warm, dry environment. earl*t
Hi buddy! IMHO gogmorgo has already offered very good suggestions. Quite obviously, moisture is the enemy of bare metal. Ergo, prevent moisture contamination. The period of storage time and environment will dictate the best option for protection. Coating with WD40 (Water dispersant) is relatively inexpensive and adequate for short intervals. For longer periods of time and/or harsher environments, oil creates a thicker barrier for a bit more cost. For longer periods of storage, an industrial product, cosmoline is much thicker and dries to a tacky finish. It can be purchased in aerosol form. It can be cleaned off when ready for installation. I'm sure you'll get other great options as well.
Alexia
Petroleum Jelly(Vaseline) is good for slathering all over parts.

Eagle
Even if you don't machine the block, before reassembly you should lightly hone the cylinder walls. That will clean up any light surface rust that might form, as well as prepare the walls so the new rings will seat.
streetjeep2.5
Definitely coat crank and rods also. I coated all engine block parts, including heads, that were not going to be replaced and bagged/boxed all of them.
