bottomline89
I haven't posted a while but here's what's going on... My 89 Mj just got herself a friend. a 96 XJ, aw4, chr. 8.25, dana 30 I'm taking the HO out of the 96 found an ax-15 in a local salvage yard I have some questions and any extra info would be GREAT! I have NO IDEA how to get this dash off.. Things i have an idea about: I can get the cluster out. Are the engine bay harness and dash harness actually separate? and i guess this aint a question but.. i'd like to reiterate the fact that I'm AN IDIOT WHEN IT INVOLVES ANY WIRING OR ELECRICITY! Thank you for the help in advance
cruiser54
There are easier ways to do the engine swap. You really wanna go hogwild and swap harnesses?
87Warrior
Having pulled and installed several MJ/XJ dashes, it is easy for me to say it is easy..... The dash is held in place by two 15mm bolts and 5 or 6 10mm bolts plus a few wires and/or cables. Start by removing the steering column. Then loosen, but don't remove, the two 15mm bolts. One on each side of the cab, above the kick panel. Then remove the defrost panel at the top of the dash. Find the 5 or 6 10mm bolts under the windshield and remove them. Carefully pivot dash away from windshield and remove/disconnect any wires or cables preventing removal.
bottomline89
thanks, i'll try that when i get back to it. There are easier ways to do the engine swap. You really wanna go hogwild and swap harnesses? I want to do a complete HO swap because the PO thrashed the renix harness..

Mattwheels
The engine harness and Dash are two separate pieces, when you look at where the harness goes into the cab from the engine bay on the driver side, in the center of that is a small decently long bolt, its a small pain to get to I used a small wobble extension. The full wire harness/engine/trans swap is a fun project that I'm doing myself. You will need to make a harness yourself too, to connect the XJ dash harness to your MJ rear harness. There is a Pinout guide on this website somewhere
64 Cheyenne
I was going to go the total HO swap on my 87, would have got me, tilt, AC, cruise... I realise your Renix harness is bad, but how bad? Not repairable? So I am still putting the HO in the 87, but with the HO motor to Renix harness TPS conversion. (Cruisers) Gonna run a stand alone regulator for the HO alternator (110 amp). don't get the AC I wanted, but oh well, I can suffer three weeks out of the year here in Montana. Much easier, quicker than doing total HO conversion. Word of caution, 96 was a bastard year, switchin over early dash to 97 up interior....beginning change over year. IMHO, if I was to do a HO dash swap, it would only be with a 97 up dash...why swap for ho-hum when you can have modern and cool? Good luck on the swap, take lots of pictures (don't forget to post some here) you'll do fine.
bottomline89
I bought a complete and running 96 XJ so the 97 + dash would just be extra $$$ besides, i really like the dash setup i have right now, the reason that I'm swapping the dash is my MJ's dash is cracked and rotted and the XJ's is in great condition. the PO really did a number on the wiring harness.. i.e. one of the marker lights had a socket that was completely different hot glued to the back of the housing.. so that may tell you something. i myself had to completely bypass the stock stereo harness and lay all new wires for everything, including the ground because he decided that he was going to "FIX" that in a similar fashion.. bottom line, i'm sick of running into his versions of "FIXING" things all over my truck, so a harness out of an XJ that was a two owner vehicle both owners in the family that i know and one was an old man that babied the jeep back and forth from golf and the local walmart, sounds like a better route not to say newer is always better.. sometimes its the only option that will alow you to keep your sanity
bottomline89
i seriously need help with the pigtail between the dash and the body.. remember its 96 so http://comancheclub.com/topic/18588-xj-dash-harness-to-rear-mj-harness-wiring-guides/ this doesn't help. Aidenmoreno3
In the middle or removing my old wiring harness off of a bad engine swap someone else did (always fun cleaning up someone else’s mess. Swapping Ta 95 XJ harness back into it and putting the I6 4.0 back into it. All I can say is if you really feel like you need to swap that harness, do it. Don’t focus on trying to salvage what you can until you actually start puttin stuff back together because then you will get all mixed up. See what you can do and then spice connectors if needed. Make sure that you have someone who really understands electrical if you don’t please because you will hate to have a short or something. Good luck!! I’m still in the learning process aswell and I already know this is going to keep kickin my butt
