2Wd Swap To 4X4

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 92 mj long bed 2wd 4.0l automatic. I bought the truck from a guy that more or less has his own jeep junk yard at his house. Tons of xj parts and 2 other mj parts trucks. When I bought the truck I scored a deal with him about getting everything to switch it over to 4x4. Trans, tcase, front and rear drive lines, and front axel all for $550. So I'm hoping that tomorrow I can pick up my 4x4 stuff, and I'm thinking I can get this 4x4 swap installed in one day... Anyone think I'm crazy or can't be done? I'll be installing front axel, removing the 2wd tyranny, reinstalling the 4x4 one with transfer case, install front drive line, and rear drive line. Hoping the guy gives me a rear drive line so I don't have to shorten my stock one.

One day is pushing it but I think it could be done in a weekend if you don't run into any problems (Rusty bolts). don't forget to ask for the tcase shift linkage including the part that bolts to the floor. It probably takes me longer to pull the seats and carpet to install the shifter than to R&R the front axle.

I just did this swap a few weeks ago, took about 3 days because of a few issues, and I did it almost entirely alone. If you've got the know how and man power, I'd say one full day can be done. I wouldn't say it'd be road able, however. Front end alignments, brake bleeding, etc may be easy tasks, but do eat up alot of time.

I'm not to familiar with anything other than my 88 but my 2wd had all the mounting bungs or whatever you call them.. for the transfer case shifter linkage but none was drilled or threaded.  that alone plus the adjustments would take a bit of time.  Also if the rear driveshaft came from the 4x4 mj (same wheelbase) I would guess you would be good, but you might already know that. Also I'm not sure when the change over to the 8.25" rear end happened in these bad boys but if there is a difference in diffs with yours and the doner they might be different lengths also.  Oh ya lol  don't forget to grab the front u-joint straps and bolts if you can... those never even crossed my mind till I went to put my front shaft in.

p.s  I'm sure your aware of the gear ratio's needing to match. just throwing that out there..  GL friend.

p.s.s if I'm not mistaken the trans crossmember can, must be moved to the most rear mounting holes in the chassis and you will need the 4x4 trans mount and exaust hanger to fit the exaust at the rear flange if you still use the stock exaust.  I think ....

DO NOT reuse the bolts and straps. They are not meant to be used more than once. Spend the $5 to buy new ones.

Where the cross member mounts depends on transmission, and has nothing to do with 2wd or 4wd.
