Zenobian_84
Will be upgrading the stock, very faded, black side view mirrors that are on the truck at the moment to ones that are chromed (see picture) They are Omix-Ada brand, and can be had for around $60(ish) a pop. Would be the solid, non-folding style. Has anyone ever gotten one of these that can tell me how it's held up? My biggest concern would be premature rust, and or being shoddily made. It's a shame I can never find good, chrome mirrors in the junkyard that aren't ruined or the solid style. Don't know why so many NON 4x4 trucks down here have the folding style. The little hinge joints inside always rust out down here in the south, from what I've seen / experienced.. :dunno:
ParadiseMJ
That pic LOOKS like it's got a folding hinge in the "crotch" at the mount. However, it's likely chromed plastic.
gogmorgo
My '91 has mirrors like that, only not chrome, they're black plastic. There are two vertical bars on the mirror (I think they're metal but I'd have to go check) that clip into the plastic mount, one on either side of the adjuster cables. It's not really a folding hinge, per se, as it's not adjustable at all, but if you give the mirror a big enough knock in either direction, the bar on the side that got hit will pop out of its clip, and the mirror will fold back with the other bar as a hinge. But don't go out and try it as it will stretch the adjuster cables, and likely the adjuster mechanism will be toast after a couple hits like that. Neither of the adjusters on my MJ work, and one of the plastic clips is cracked so it doesn't hold the mirror as tightly as it could, and it vibrates as I'm going down the road. I wouldn't shy away from them because of the way they attach, as they seem fairly solid (mine have obviously been knocked around a ton in the 300k miles), but I've been meaning to replace mine and all the XJ's and MJ's I've found in wrecking yards with those mirrors either have solid clips and non-functional adjusters, or else they look like someone took a sledge hammer to them. GirsMJ86
I'd wager they are chromed plastic. The factory chrome mirrors are a chromed metal skin over the standard black mirrors or something along those lines anyways. I've never looked at them too hard, I just know they are metal and there is still black plastic around the opening where the mirror is. After almost 28 years my chrome ones still look great, a little pitted from stone chips and the fact they appear to be pot metal, but still nice considering the age. I've personally never seen ones that don't "fold", all mine have been the type gomorgo described. Where they don't really fold but will flex back or forth if they get hit. gogmorgo
I've seen some that are completely solid and don't fold, and pulled one off an XJ at a jy (if memory serves it was a '93) but then I went around to the driver's side, it was just the same one I described above. Call me OCD but I prefer the shaky rear view to mismatched mirrors... so I left it behind even though it was in awesome shape. Actually, come to think of it, I left it in the bed of a '92 MJ... HOrnbrod
The manual mirrors were fixed. The remote and power mirrors had the break-away hinge.
GirsMJ86
Mine aren't remote or power yet they break away.
HOrnbrod
Yes, I went back to 86 parts catalog and they did have the manual breakaway mirrors available, black or chrome. Didn't find them in the newer models though. So UB correct Alex.
GirsMJ86
Wow, another '86 only thing huh? Chrysler really had some issues with some of the options AMC offered didn't they? Really going to hate getting rid of this rig just for all the oddities I could swap to another, funds just won't allow that. :wall:
carnuck
'91+ XJs had lots of them too. I scored the chrome grill and extended bumper from the '86 I parted (wish I'd kept the 4.10 front/rear diff!) and I have spare red doors with chrome handles and mirrors from a '91 XJ I parted. GHayduke
I wish they made chrome handles for the late 90's XJs... But alas..it's hard to get chrome on modern cars anymore... even just chromed plastic...
carnuck
I have a chrome front bumper in my for sale pile.
