Roggesound
I've got an 88 comanche 4.0. I'd like to swap out the stock fan for an electric fan. I saw one at the junkyard in a late 90s cherokee. I could pull the fan, but are there sensors or wiring harnesses that I need to pull as well to make the swap? Is this swap even possible with my 88? I've been searching the forums for this info, but I haven't had any luck. Any help would be appreciated.
onlyinajeep726
Are you talking about swapping out the mechanical fan for another electric fan? If so, you can wire it to come on with the key in the "run" position. You'll need a relay, some fuses and wire. As far as adapting the fan to the radiator top support beam, there are some write ups on some other Jeep forums. The wiring is explained there too. Google will yield you lot of results. http://www.naxja.org/forum/showpost.php?p=245935128&postcount=10 http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=942192
Roggesound
Yeah, I could wire it to run all the time, but is there a way to set it up to run the way that it would in a newer jeep? Like where it runs only at certain temperatures or whatever? Probably simpler to run it all the time... Yes, I want to swap the mechanical fan for an electric. mnkyboy
When I did mine i got a TS155 temp switch which turns on around 212º and off around 192º,I welded a bung into a piece of pipe then put it in line on the upper radiator hose. I just wired the switch to a relay for each fan and I was done.
dasbulliwagen
I used an adjustable fan controller available from any performance parts supplier. I bought some brass fittings and installed the sensor into the bypass line going through the intake manifold ( mine is a 2.5 ) but it would work similarly on the 4.

I picked up a single aux fan in the junk yard out of a cherokee, so I think what I'll do is use one of these fan controllers to run this electric fan along with the stock mechanical fan. Now if I could just find an intact stock fan shroud in the yard I'd be all set.
phenryiv1
I recently replaced the mechanical fan in my project car with an electric fan and used an adjustable fan controller as well. It was about a 30 minute job, including running the wiring to the trunk (car has the battery in the trunk for weight distribution) and and adding the relay. I went with a basic fan controller and cheap electric fan from Advance Auto. Both are Imprerial parts- I believe the setup was around $80 after using a couple coupon codes. I mention this in the MJ forum because after adding a transmission cooler to the MJ I thought about how easiy the fan mod would have been on the MJ, had I not already added the trans cooler in fornt of the grille. mnkyboy
I looked at fan controllers when I did mine, they all get mixed reviews and a lot of complaints of failures. That's why I went the route I did, $10 thermal switch and a couple std relays, the whole set up was under $20 and IMO far more reliable then the controllers. Also in the event that I have an issue any parts store will have the parts to fix it on the shelf.
