  1. Thank you! That's very good info. I already put in the starter, but next time I'm under there, maybe I'll jam a plug in there.
  2. Here's a video I found on the youtubes. At about 2 minutes and 30 seconds you'll see the hole after he takes the starter out. His doesn't have a plug either, so I guess I'm just going to put my new starter in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCyBrn0k7eA
  3. I agree with you. But what is it?
  4. Well, I lose a lot of oil, and this hole is right above the starter, near the oil pan, and there was a bunch of oily junk on top of the starter. Of course, that could have come from any number of places. I'd just like to hear from someone who remembers taking their starter out and seeing the hole, or seeing a plug, or knows why that hole is there.
  5. So I pulled my starter today to work on an issue I was having with the starter not running right away when I turned the key. After I got it out, I noticed that there's an open hole in the crank case directly above the starter. Should there be something in that hole, like a soft plug or something? What is its function? Thanks for any info. I'm putting in a new starter in the morning, so if that needs to be plugged up, I need to do it before then.
  6. This is a good plan. I picked up a single aux fan in the junk yard out of a cherokee, so I think what I'll do is use one of these fan controllers to run this electric fan along with the stock mechanical fan. Now if I could just find an intact stock fan shroud in the yard I'd be all set.
  7. Thank you! That's exactly what I was searching for.
  8. Yeah, I could wire it to run all the time, but is there a way to set it up to run the way that it would in a newer jeep? Like where it runs only at certain temperatures or whatever? Probably simpler to run it all the time... Yes, I want to swap the mechanical fan for an electric.
  9. I've got an 88 comanche 4.0. I'd like to swap out the stock fan for an electric fan. I saw one at the junkyard in a late 90s cherokee. I could pull the fan, but are there sensors or wiring harnesses that I need to pull as well to make the swap? Is this swap even possible with my 88? I've been searching the forums for this info, but I haven't had any luck. Any help would be appreciated.
  10. http://peoria.craigslist.org/cto/3890148079.html Seriously. I hope someone here owns/ buys that sucker.
  11. Thanks very much! It was the Trans fuse. How silly of me to think that the fuse that's specifically for the backup lights would be the only one to effect the backup lights. Ahh, good times. Anyway, off to adjust my parking brake and try to squeeze an inspection out of someone before Monday.
  12. That's a good tip. I'll check that out when I get the truck back tomorrow. Thanks.
  13. No, i've never seen them come on in any gear. I should check that again though, as I only looked at one bulb, and it wasn't on the side I can see from the drivers seat.... I'm pretty sure they're just not getting power.
  14. Cleaning the C101 didn't fix the reverse lights either. Although i suppose I could clean that thing more... but this should have gotten me somthing. What the hell were they thinking with that connector? It's packed full of crap. Maybe if I have some time later I'll soak that sucker in mineral spirits to get it really clean.
  15. So I checked my new switch using the pinout from Hornbrod's link. Turns out that it's correct for park and reverse, and there is no continuity between any pins for any of the other gears. Maybe it's out of adjustment, but I can't really adjust it at all. So that explains why it won't start in neutral... sadly, it doesn't explain why my reverse lights don't work. I followed the wires back to the C101 connector, so I'm cleaning that out now. It was on my list anyway.
  16. Well, 200 bucks later... still no reverse lights. I knew there wasn't one at the junkyard, I was there last week. Anyone have a pinout for the neutral safety switch? Also, this thing is supposed to be adjustable, but I can't move it around very much. It seems to be close to the correct adjustment, but the truck won't start in neutral. It never would with the old switch either... Only starts in park.
  17. Balls... I broke it pulling it out. $218 on RockAuto... still looking on amazon. That was surely the problem, though. The brass bits were really gummed up, and there are grooves in some of them... so it should be replaced anyway...
  18. Thanks! It is an automatic, and a step by step is exactly what I needed. Thanks very much, I'll tear into it right now.
  19. So I'm trying to get my 88 4.0 2wd shortbed to pass NYS inspection. After replacing four brake lines, three brake hoses and two brake cables, plus two new tires and refreshing the ground to the horn, I have come to the point where I'm trying to get my reverse lights to work. No voltage at the lamp socket, no voltage at the fuse box. The fuse is good, and I see a bit of voltage happening when I turn on the turn signals. I know about the switch on the transmission, but I was hoping that the lack of voltage at the fuse box might point to something else. Is there a switch in the steering column? Anyway, I'll probably be under the truck looking at the switch for a bit. Pain in the balls. Incidentally, does everyone's speedometer run backwards when in reverse? I just noticed that.
  20. NOE 7151365, NOE 7151366, NOE 7151367 are the part numbers I'm finding on the napa site, and I'm just putting them here for future reference. I will definitely give that valve cover mod a shot when the weather warms up a bit. Thanks very much!
  21. Should I remove the PCV? It had one when I bought it, and I replaced it, but I figured it didn't come with one, because the parts store couldn't look it up, I had to show them the old one. Would it work better if I just jammed the tube in the hole in the valve cover? What I'd like most is to keep the oil from hitting the air filter, which makes it less filtery. It's interesting to think that this is just condensation, but I guess that makes some sense, since I don't see the same stuff in the valve cover. Is it also condensation inside the dipstick tube?
  22. I'm sure there's something about this in the forums somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it. My 88 comanche has had foamy wet oil sludge pushing out of the PCV into the air box on top of the air filter. I know there's water in there, because when it's cold, it freezes. The same stuff seems to push up the dipstick tube after driving long distances, because I see it on the dipstick when I check the oil. So I thought this was just a problem with my Jeep, but I went to look at another guy's 88 Comanche today, and his had the exact same thing. His oily foam was a bit cleaner than mine, but it was there, dripping onto the air filter just like mine does. My question is, what is causing this, and is there anything I can do to fix it?
  23. Thanks. That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. If I can make the transmission work, the truck becomes much more worth it to me.
  24. I'm looking at buying my second Comanche, and the guy says the automatic transmission doesn't shift. He says he can drive it by physically moving the shift lever from 1-2 to 3 to D every time he stops. It's like his automatic transmission thinks it's a manual transmission. Has anyone else had this happen? Should I just replace the transmission, or do you think I could fix it?
