fishdmax Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I just got my headliner out and there is damage to the backer board on the sides above the doors where the clips are. That area is just about destroyed. Is there a way to build it back up so I can recover the headliner. New member here, first post. I've found a lot of anwers to fix many things using "search", but nothing on the backing. Steve
88whitemanche Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 There's a guy here by the user name a1500ram-- from SMS headliners his name is Steve he makes the headliners for the comanche....great quality product and awesome customer service....
zackcj7 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I repaired mine with duct tape. It actually worked pretty well.
skidoo_j Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I second SMS headliner. I'm a very happy customer. When it came down to it I priced out redoing my old one vs getting one from sms. I would have saved 50-60 doing it my self, but I had never done it before, wasn't sure of condition of my current backer board, and figured my time was worth something. Sure enough when I removed my old liner the backer was just about powder in a few places and got pretty beat up during removal. If you're set to repair / refinish: Duct tape Fiberglass Cardboard and spray adhesive some rigid plastic. Based on your photo it's broken where the metal clips go so anything you repair it with needs to be pretty stout. The liner will stay in place with out the clips, but I've found it doesnt' rattle with the clips/velcro
dakal Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 third with sms headliner. great product. you'll never do it as good.
AMCJeepMJ Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Fourthed on the SMS headliner. Super happy with mine even though I was careless and put a 1" rip in it from a picture frame only a few weeks after putting it in.
fishdmax Posted August 17, 2013 Author Posted August 17, 2013 I'll order the complete headliner from Steve. Thanks for all the replys
glundblad Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Mine was also in pretty rough shape so I bought one from a vendor in ebay (can't recall the name). I had trouble getting it to fit so it ended up in the trash. Then I bought a new backer from a local JY, bought some 3M headliner glue and put new fabric on it. I doubt I have $20 in it.
