Xj Trans Problems Again

Recommended Posts

What could make a AW4 which only shifts manually currently, blow a tranny fluid pan gasket? Today my brother was driving his XJ and after about 30 miles of on and off driving, a big puff of smoke blew out and we checked and he's out of tranny fluid because the gasket off the pan blew and sprayed right on the exhaust. Ran fine still though, he was a mile from our house so he just took it on home and it had no problem.

My 99 blew a ton of fluid out the dipstick one day got on the exhaust I thought I had a fire. Tried to find why and found no info so I changed the filter and new fluid drove it two more years and was still running when I sold it.

Sometimes re tapping the threads, hole, to a coarser thread will work.

Then there are the thread repair kits. You drill the hole out to the proper size and install the new bushing? which will give you the same, original threads.

Drill the hole out and re thread for the next size larger bolt.

Wrap it with duct tape

The recommended torque is 65 in lbs. It is not recommended leaving a bolt out. They're there for a reason. That said, i have done it. Gunked the heck out of the gasket with RTV and put it back together.Don't over tighten the 2 bolts on either side of the missing one. Same torque as all the others. Really recommend you repair the hole and install a bolt there.
