Knucklehead97
What could make a AW4 which only shifts manually currently, blow a tranny fluid pan gasket? Today my brother was driving his XJ and after about 30 miles of on and off driving, a big puff of smoke blew out and we checked and he's out of tranny fluid because the gasket off the pan blew and sprayed right on the exhaust. Ran fine still though, he was a mile from our house so he just took it on home and it had no problem.
Automan2164
I would imagine the only thing that would overpressurize the pan area would be a blockage in the vent and blockage over the dipstick.
sinkrun
My 99 blew a ton of fluid out the dipstick one day got on the exhaust I thought I had a fire. Tried to find why and found no info so I changed the filter and new fluid drove it two more years and was still running when I sold it.
Knucklehead97
Theres a transmission fluid filter and vent? How hard are they to change amd how much?
87manche1
Vent is probably clogged its a rubber tube usually run up the dipstick and has a white cap. Most auto transmissions have a filter kits probably aroung 35 then the cost of trans fluid
Knucklehead97
We got the kit and started to work. An figured out the bolts had been tightened to much and cracked the gasket. And one bolt was stripped. The thing is, the threads on the transmission side are stripped... what can we do about this?
jimoshel
Sometimes re tapping the threads, hole, to a coarser thread will work. Then there are the thread repair kits. You drill the hole out to the proper size and install the new bushing? which will give you the same, original threads. Drill the hole out and re thread for the next size larger bolt. Wrap it with duct tape
Pete M
yup, what he said. also I moved this to the tech side since this problem can be shared by mjs
Knucklehead97
Thanks! And does one bolt on the pan really matter? I mean all the others tighten down perfectly. Also what is the recommended torque for the bolts?
jimoshel
The recommended torque is 65 in lbs. It is not recommended leaving a bolt out. They're there for a reason. That said, i have done it. Gunked the heck out of the gasket with RTV and put it back together.Don't over tighten the 2 bolts on either side of the missing one. Same torque as all the others. Really recommend you repair the hole and install a bolt there.
Knucklehead97
I'm going to fix the hole asap. Its just the question of if it would completely mess everyrhing up if it was left out for a bit.
Pete M
it might. might leak a tiny amount, might gradually get worse. might not leak at all. :dunno: impossible to say.
Knucklehead97
Eh I'll just try to tap it or ducttape it instead of risking it. Ive just gotta hurry and get all his transmission problems figured out so he can get back on the road and I can start my RMS replacement and brake adjustment >.<
mvusse
When looking for the end of the vent tube, don't get confused. If 2wd there should be only one, but if 4wd there should be three of them: front axle, transmission and transfer case.
Geonovast
I've never seen a vent tube on a 4wd manual trans. :dunno: Is it just the autos?
Knucklehead97
Its not a manual. Its a auto, but the PO ripped off the wiring so now you have to shift manually. I'm working on figuring out the wiring
nitroxsteve
I've never seen a vent tube on a 4wd manual trans. :dunno: Is it just the autos? I think they all would need a vent. My 5 speed 4x4 trans started life as 2wd but the vent tube connecteds to the top of the bell housing.
