Running Rubicon 17's On Their Mj

Was wondering if any CC members have run or are running these on their MJ and would post some pics?

 

They are 2013 jk 255R75-15's, and they need a spacer adapter or 5 on 5 axles. Actually want to see them with spacers if anyone has that set up. Thanks!

Perfect - that's what I was looking for...forgot Alexia went with JK's and is using the spacer / adapter. Funny thing is, even with the spacer the tires don't have that "stickin' out" look that's popular in Phx area. Looks like a stock big tire on a Comanche.

 

Now, what tires can you run on that 17" rim? The 255R75-17 should be about a 32" tire. If the rim is a relatively narrow 7.5" width, would there be a 33" or 35" tire that would work?

Running  285/70 R17 pro comp extreme muds on Bucky  love em.... for an aggressive off road tire they have the best street manners and handling of any I have ever had. and they are not obnoxiously loud on the highway either I have them mounted on AEV pintlers running 1.50" spidertrax spacers (on the rear only). I love the combo the look and the handling. The price well......not so much.

Check my thread the building of Bucky for pics. The Procomps in this size would work on your narrow rim and the over all dims are about 11 X 33

Those are indeed very nice treads and come in sizes up to 35", radials too. Since your in CO, the mud treads are probably a great all year tire. Going with the 70 sidewalls also makes for a taller tire profile, which might be the look that I'm going for.

I have run about every "mud terrain" on the market. I truly believe the best (and very under rated) tire is the Cooper STT Kevlar. They are of course what I currently run on my MJ. They are great on the street, wear very well, clean out good, and just plain hook up on rock. I have watched them walk circles around goodyear MTR's and BFG's. I am just one opinion, but you'll notice most of the guys I run with use the same tire. There is a reason. If you get a chance, check them out. (Also, I have never seen one get a sidewall gouge as of yet) Very strong tires. The only downfall is they only make them up to 37's. If they ever make a 40 (rumor is they might) it will hit the big tire drivers by storm.

By the way they use these tires in "stock" form on some of the top Pro-lite trucks on the short course circuits. That says something!

There's not a lot of mud here in the SouthWest, when there is it's pretty nasty stuff. I'm more trending toward rounded and sharp rocks, stuff you'll find up on the Rim, Canyon and Flaggstaff. Moab would be a future trip. So, thanks for the recommendation on the Cooper STT Kevlar's. I just put Cooper Discoverer A/T3's 31x10.5R15's on the Comanche that I built for my son. Haven't tested them out, but they should be a good "starter" tire for him.

 

Looking at Coopers tire site, they have a LT285/70R17 that's approved for a 7.5" rim width and is overall a 33" tire diameter - that's the one I'd lean toward using the Rubi Rims

I put some on my XJ for a short time not by using adapters but by using WJ front brake components, this is advantagious since it gets you higher steering, crossover steering, big brakes and keeps the axles a little narrower.

The stock 32" JK BFG M/T DT tire works great with minor rubbing at full steering lock. Using control arms that have a slight inward curve solves the issue easily for 32" tires at least.

Sir Sam, like that idea of using WJ parts. Did you keep the D30 and adapt the WJ steering, brakes and knuckles? Or did you pull a complete WJ front axle? thanks

 

I was using the XJ D30, I took the WJ knuckles, hubs, brakes, and rotors when I was mocking it all up to see if thats the route I wanted to go. I think that if you do that you will need the spacer that everyone talks about in the WJ to XJ swap threads. Definitely do a test mockup with some downtime to order the right parts. I ended up not doing it because I found some 5x4.5 mtrs/moabs to replace the 1 bad moab/mtr I had.

I remember reading about the 1/4 spacer to adapt the D30 unit bearing to the WJ disc brake upgrade. Gets me into 5 on 5 up front and eliminates the spacer. Thanks for the idea.

 

I run Stillen rotors/metal matrix pads with Akebono calipers on my WJ, stopping improved dramatically over to 2001 stock stuff. Would be a nice upgrade with the Rubi rims.

 

Alexia, $1,200 for five brand new tires and rims, just like yours....good deal or not?

I paid $1,300 for mine with 1,000 miles on them. More than I wanted to pay, but the 2013 variety is rare on Craigslist and will get $1,000+ prices. I can pick up the older 2007-2012 Rubicon style rims with 90%+ tread tires for $500 to $1,000.

What I ran into was that you needed both the hub spacer and a brake caliper spacer, I think the brake caliper spacer was the new variation in my setup.

 

I think its a nice option if you want to upgrade brakes anyway, and you don't like the added width of the spacers.

Five 5 on 5 for 12 bills, picked them up today. Didn't realize they were 10th year Anniversary Rubi rims. Now I can convert all the great inputs from the forum and get them on my Desert Rat Comanche.

 

Down the road, priced out some Discoverer STTs, gets you up to a 33" tire on 7.5" rims.

 

If only they had Rubicon bucket seat take-offs. Fat chance!
