71 Javelin Sst

Recommended Posts

This was my dads 71 Javelin. He has owned it since 1989, and held on to it since. It has a factory 304 in it (getting rebuilt). Right now I'm going to make it road worthy so my dad can at least have the joy of driving it since he only got to drive it for 2 years out of all of the years he has owned it. My Plans are:

-Rebuild the current 304 and Tranny

-Get electrical done

-Basically get it street legal and drive able first

-Interior finished

Once that gets done

-Rebuild 401 with mods and convert to fuel injection

-Rebuild M11B transmission

-Body work

-Repaint Factory Snow White

-Install NOS parts ( not Nitrous, New Old Stock)

And other things that I know I am missing.

She may look rough, but for its age its in good condition.

I truthfully thought that I would never get this car, but he gave it to me, and I want to let him see it run again, since he can't fix it up himself. I love my Comanche but this comes before the MJ, not that I'm not going to work on the MJ, its just I am going to bust my butt to get this thing going again. The Comanche runs, the Javelin dosent. I'm building it the way he wanted it. Because he has planned it all out for the past 24 years. (Plus we both share the same ideas)

And thus the revival of a beast....................Begins

I love these cars. Almost had a purple '69 AMX as my first car back in high school until I discovered the MJs. I prefer the looks of the '71s & '72s but I probably should have gotten it and maybe found someone to trade or something. My favorite pony car that's for sure.

Reason I don't like Mustangs is because Ford always broke down. I have loved AMC's since I was a kid. My dad first car was a AMC Gremlin X he bought for $1000, I bought my first vehicle The MJ for a thousand. Out of all of the years my dad has owned the Javelin (before I was born) I had never seen what it looked like in the interior ir under the hood. The only memories I had was of the car sitting with a car cover on it all of my life. Nver seen the Interior , never seen the engine compartment. Told my dad that and he looked pretty sad. all he did was get mad if I wanted to look at it. Since I got accepted into automotive college classes in high school, he gave it to me to fix up. Now that is all I want to work on (and the Comanche of course)

And as for the CDI factor, girls are gonna really like a supercharged or turbocharged 401 :brows:

Awesome man.  I'm loving the dual projects, but I biased.   I have an 87 mj and a 71 amx.  Loving your SST, she's real nice with some cool options.  Looks like the interior was originallly green.  Reminds me of mine with the twin vinyl, except mine is quick silver, black on black interior/hardtop.  Pm me if you need parts I got a bunch.

Thanks, yeah she originally had green interior and green tops. ugly combo in my opinion. before it sat for many years, my dad started to swap the black interior out of his 72 Javelin into the 71. Good thing though that I have all of the interior peieces (excpet for the carpet). Just 2 peieces are green that I have to paint or find a replacment.

71 AMX, my dad wasnt a huge fan of that year but I thought that they were nice looking cars. I'm assuming its a 390 or 360? Either way, still a nice car to srive.

I do have some black interior pieces.  A column as well I believe.  Yah I actually like the green interior(I put one in my sst that I sold)  Love the steering wheel.  The motor is more likely a 360.  The stopped making the 390 after 70 but someone could have put one in.  The way to check is the # is cast into the middle of the sides of the block behind the motor mounts.

So just wanting some opinions, I'm wanting to swap the 304 out for the 401 I have. But all of the mods I want to do to the 401 is expensive because its not just gonna be made for crusing, its gonna be cranking some horses when I'm done. Now as for the 304, just rebuild it and drive it around until I get a lot of the mods done to the 401. put a 4 barrel carb on the 304 new air intake, some racing peices in it and just use it to drive the car around.

What I'm trying to say is go ahead and rebuild the 401 and put it all together, put it in the car, and update it with mods as time progresses, or rebuild the 304 for now and have it to drive around in while the 401 is being built with mods.

I'm gonna work on it as I save the money to find a person that is good at bodywork get everything fixed on the body. Right now I just want to get it primed white, with the body work done and one of the drivetrains rebuilt, so my dad can drive it again. Then it will get repainted factory snow white.

Just want to see what you guys think. Thanks

That's basically my plan.  I'm going to try to run my stock 360 as long as I can while I build my 401.  I probably won't take it as far as yours but you never know.  I like the idea of being able to drive it and take my time building a really impressive 401.  Love the spoiler, it's a racing touch from Mark Donohue.

Thanks. all of the things I want to do to the 401 is adding up and gets expensive, I'm basically making a street street strip engine. Some of the mods I want to to is or course up grade internals, pistons, bigger cam and so on. But other mods like fuel injection and either a supercharger or a twin turbos.

Saw a guy on youtube testing out his supercharged 401, the thing was cranking out 946+ Hp. can't remember at what rpm though.

Sounds fun now but adding that much HP trickles down which means possible adding frame and body stiffeners, traction bars, better axle(woodriff keys don't like that much torque), and more.  I'd love to go nuts like that but I also don't want to get too away from the awesome stock look.  Plus I have the cowl hood and I won't cut that for a supercharger even though I want to drive around like mad max. :D

Oh Its still gonna look somewhat stock, they have superchargers that don't stick out of the hood. Its gonna have some AMX Javelin parts on it. Its gonna be street strip car. something  I can still drive around, but still kick some ones butt at racing.
