Are Any Mj "frames" Different Then Each Other?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for another frame and cab for my Comanche Project because mines bent and theres a 1989 Comanche for Sale on the local online classifieds for $300 and i want it but it needs to be the same frame as mine. its an 89 with 4x4 but its the 4cylinder gasser. looks like its a 5ft box, the gas fillup isn't as close to the fender as my comanche and mines a 7ft box but i don't know the difference other then length. mines an 89 comanche with a 7ft box and its got a 4.0L and 4x4, i don't know if there is a difference in wheel-base etc. i don't mind running a short box so long as my driveshaft from my comanche is the same and i can swap everything over without shortening anything etc.

the 6 ft beds are different than 7 ft beds.  but the differences may not matter depending on what you're needing to do.  if all you're worried about is the driveshaft,  there will be a 6" difference between driveshaft lengths (given identical drivetrains).  shortening one will cost less than a hundred bucks.

i was in a rush writing that post, i ment to ask if the 4.0L will fit(which i assume it will), and i guess you guys answered my question about not being able to run a long box on the short box frame without modifying the brackets, etc.

You will have to make some room for the 4.0

that's only if he's swapping a 4.0 into an 86 MJ

so an 89 2.5L has room for a 4.0L? what does the 86 have in it that takes up room?

The Firewall I think don't know what else you would have to to take out.

@Pete M Thats what I thought he was wanting to do, If i read it all correctly

I'm assuming you were planning on doing it with your MJ and thats how you found out? i wonder why they changed the firewall between those years...

The firewall changed because of the 4.0l.

In addition to the 2.5l 1986 had the 2.8l V6,in 1987 the 4.0l came out so they had to make room.

ok, that would make alot of sense, i assumed that the 4.0L came in the comanches since day one.

Everything from the cab forward is the same, but you will have to swap everything over, including radiator support and motor mounts out of your old truck.  The rear of the frame is different, with 7" less between the axles and 5" less behind the rear axle.

The only parts that won't fit are rear driveshaft (will need to be shortened 6 or 7"), gas tank and bed.

Reminds me of an 80s VW Jetta diesel I was interested in a few years ago. As soon as I saw the ad I called them (8:30 in the evening), explained I had the money in cash, could I come over to look at it. Was told it was too late, could I come 9:00 am instead. I asked if 8:00 am would work as that worked better for me and was told no earlier than 9. I was the first person to call about it.

So I get there at 8:45, only to find out they had sold it to someone else  an hour earlier and already gave him the title. fist%20shake%202.gif
