Bumper Removal

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to take my front bumper off so i can paint it and my fender flares black. How do i go about taking off my front bumper, fender flares, and the weird thing attached to the flares and wraps under the bumper?

Thanks

It's easiest to unbolt the 3 bolts in each bumper bracket to the frame. Most likely Torx bolts and you can see them if you crane your neck from below/behind the bumper. Support the bumper so it doesn't fall on you but usually you need to wiggle the bumper off the frame rails. The fender flares are held on with several small bolts and you need to remove the nuts you can see along the inner well. You may also find a screw under the forward end of the flare attached the the sheet metal. Don't be surprised if some of the flare bolts snap off. The rubber shield behind the bumper can have a combination of plastic and metal rivets and even a couple bolts. Take your time and remove all fasteners as cleanly as possible. That will pay off during re-installation.

I might hit you up on that sometime, if my mom starts allowing people in my yard haha (I'm just sixteen, so) I'm just a hair outside collinsville in a little valley known as duck springs. I can't believe theres someone else with a comanche around here that actually builds them up. Ive only seen 4 around town. Are the bolts a bolt and nut or are they threaded to the frame?

It's not that bad. I've taken plenty of front bumpers off these things. The main thing is to just support it so it doesn't fall on ya. Ask me how I know.

The flares are easy too. More than likely the bolts will break like already said. If they do don't worry, they can be reattached using stainless bolts, fender washers, and nylon locking nuts. That's one of the first "mods" I always do to my rigs. You can check out pics in my 91 topic from my signature.

Are you talking "shotgun across the lap" anti social or just "don't want any strangers around" anti social?

Why don't YOU clean the yard..then you're golden. :D

.

You'll have fun removing the flares if the bumper is a problem.  The flares are held on by small nuts, and then by push on washers.  If you are lucky enough to get the nuts off out without without breaking the bolt/studs, you'll have an easier time.  Get up in there and start spraying them with PB Blaster or Kroil about a week ahead of time, a couple times a day.  That'll increase your chances of not busting anything.

I use a breaker bar on all 6 until they're free and then an air ratchet to buzz them off. I've seen too many Comanche's go off to scrapyards and junkyards already. I would rather help someone keep one going than see another one go off to that dreadful place.

I broke my breaker bar during my brothers ball joint replacement xD and air ratchets are a dream i have. To be honest i don't even have a floor jack, just a bottle one. I don't care what i have to put in this Comanche, whether it be sweat blood or cash, its not going anywhere. I'm still wondering how i havent seen you driving around, i can spot a comanche from a mile away. Closest ive seen to one that looked like yours, was a white 2wd five speed 4.0 in the dollar tree parking lot beside hobby lobby. Which i kindly stuck a note in the windshield of asking how much for :D (this was way before i had mine)

Sheeesh that sucks I was at 16 getting home at 3am and up by 6 to get to school the next day of course my parents got pissed but they didn't mind because I was up before them when they were going to drop me off at school.

Perhaps if you had gotten a little more sleep you would have remembered the lessons regarding punctuation. Just messin' with ya!! :D
