Easiest Way To A 4.0L?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure it's been covered a lot here but I'm starting to get glossy eyed looking through old posts. I have an 87 with the 2.5L t.b.i. (Renix?) and was wondering what us the easiest route in the engine bay to swap in a 4.0l? Do I just find a renix 4.0 and take the harness sensors and all or can I use 4.0 h.o. Stuff. Don't really want to swap out my dash cause I was just gonna swap my 97 xj drive train in dash and all but would like an easier swap. Thanks all for input or a point in the right place to look.

If youre keeping the 87, there is NO easy way, just the "HARD" way. Taking the dash out isnt that hard or complicated. It can be accomplished in a couple hours, then you have access to all the wiring you need to get to. Now converting to a 97 up dash is different, as you will need to relocate a lot of stuff and make and mount new brackets. For the dash youd be better off sticking with stock, as it is all a bolt in procedure.... same goes for a 4.0 conversion 96 and under. Yeah its a lot of work, but theres no way around it, so either do the swap of sell and buy a 4.0 already done. Let us know what you end up doiung, and good luck!

I read your post 4 times... I think you asked what is the easy way to put a 4.0 in your 87 2.5. well the easy way is to swap in a 87 through 89 4.0 engine from another XJ or MJ.  now I have done this swap and its like any engine swap. what you will need if both are auto, or standard? the wire harness from the firewall forward from the 4.0 Jeep, also the engine mount frame horns from the 4.0 Jeep. and of course the radiator form the 4.0. that's the basics. there is no need to change the dash or any dash wires.

you also may have to swap gas tank and fuel pump..I did. also you do have to modify the fuel soft line and splice in the 4.0 line at the end so it can connect to the 4.0 fuel rail.

if you are skilled with auto repair..with 1 or 2 helpers it is a weekend project. it took me and a buddy about 16hrs to convert 2wd 2.5 manual to a 4wd 4.0 auto (all new drive train with engine swap.   that is the easy way.. now if you go to Ho engine and or want to change dash well I didn't do that so I don't know how long but I would expect double the time to Change all that.

As for selling your MJ and buying a 4.0 MJ well in my area that would most likely cost double or more because a 2.5 MJ is half the value or more of a 4.0 MJ.. and that's assuming you would even find a nice running 4.0 MJ for under 3k

Nice running 4.0s can be had in my area for 700-1500 all day.

Expensive area. I buy complete running Jeeps with good running 4.0's for $400-$700.

:fs1: :fs1: :fs1:

Well heck you guys should own 3 or more MJs then for those prices.  rusted out beat up MJs in Cincy area are over a grand.. Nice MJs are 3-5 k.. and there are only a few.

I got my POS beat MJ for 800 just the other day in cinci. :fs1:

Nice..that MJ was 2500.00 I believe when it was first posted.. Seen it had blown head gasket and he wanted 1500.00. So you got him down to 800.00 that's good. I was interested in that one cause it was a 92. Is the frame solid back at the rear spring mounts?

Good score don't see many 91 or 92 MJs .. Enjoy it

Yeah I originally had email him (before winter) he never emailed back and then I saw it on Craigslist for 1200 and I email this guy and it turned out to be someone different who bought it January, he bought it for 1000, and then I bought it from him for 800.  I'll have to check it out when I get back from school but from what I remember it was..but I can't say for a hundred present it is. Honestly just the bed and floor pans are the worst part on it. The carpet what still pretty wet and damp when I pulled it out before i left.

Define 'a few'.

8 complete and running

2 complete but not running, Could get running with minimum effort.

1 complete but totally shot.

1 a bad azz mixture of various pieces from assorted machines. Engine runs but truck is inoperable.
