Project Stay Broke

Recommended Posts

Well I dropped off the 88 comanche at my brother in law garage Friday. This week she will be getting lots of new goodies added. We are sending the old dana 35 to retirement, swapping in a 8.25 29 spline with 4.56 gears, locker SOA set up. Up front new Yukon carrier and gears along with a spartan locker. The cheesy stock front axle shafts are being replaced with chromoly one piece shafts and spicer 760 u joints. We are also tossing the current shocks and replacing them with Bilstein 5100 series shocks. New spicer 1310 u joints will be put on the driveshafts. Rear main seal was leaking so that is being fixed too. I will post plenty of pictures when I get it back next weekend hopefully.

Along with that here are some of the other things I have replaced since I bought this truck.

New fuel pump, injectors, clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder, starter, alternator, valve cover gasket, skyjacker track bar, Mickey Thompson 33 x 12.50s

When I bought the truck it had the lift already on it. From my measurement it's a 6 inch lift.

Next up in the money line will probably be an ARB Bull bar and winch. Then I will start looking for bucket seats.

I could not have done any of this without the help from my Comanche Club Family. Thank all of you guys for all the help you have provided me!!!!

More to come I am sure

WOW!!!!!!!  Nothing has gone smoothly yet and I still don't have my truck going on 3 weeks now.

2 bad carriers, Robert at RWK is going to check with the MFG about them. Finally machined the hole to the correct size and have the front just about done. Locker and gears should be finished up today along with axle shafts and U joints.

The rear axle is done as well except for the shock mounts.

Bilstein 5100 shocks arrived late Friday and they appear to be the wrong shock for the rear. I ordered them from Kolak so I figured he would know which shocks to send. They have a plate going thru one end with a hole on each side side of the plate. From what I see it looks like I need a shock with just a hole on each end. Maybe I am just an idiot but they look wrong to me. :wall:  Waiting on him to call me back with a solution.

I did order my ARB Bull bar but I am finding out that nothing goes smooth when working on a 25 year old truck. Just waiting on the next problem.

Hang in there Mr. Moore. It's a bumpy ride but well worth it. I think we're gluttons for punishment when we buy these old trucks. It is a truly educational experience with a fantastic pay-off. I really like the white Comanche. Hope to meet and greet sometime. Any chance you'll come up to any of the Jeep events in this summer? It would be great to have another entrant in the Comanche class.

Well here is the latest and greatest hicup in this project. The pin bearing (or what ever that bearing in the center is) is all to hell so it looks like a new front drive shaft is on the way now. Tom Woods should be sending me a nice new front drive shaft to replace the junk below Monday.

As soon as I get the truck back I will take some pictures of all her new parts before they get dirty.

Reminds me of the show In living color...... Mo money Mo Money Mo Money

Looking very promising!

Thank buddy, I can't wait to get it back on the road again. People at work will probably be glad when I get it back too. I have an ARB Bull bar winch bumper in my office at work. Everyone is like when in the hell are you going to get this big a$$ bumper out of your office?

Well I just ordered my front drive shaft. I was going to get a Tom Wood's driveshaft. But after several hours of research and lurking around different Jeep forums I decided to go with a Tatton drive shaft.  He sounds like a stand behind his product kinda guy and has a quality product. Not to mention he was about 80 dollars cheaper than Tom Wood's. Any one running one of these?

Guess ill just keep the 3 U joints I bought for the for the old drive shaft. As long as I have some spare parts around they will never break... LOL

And by the way.... This is by far the absolute best forum out there. Kudos to everyone.

I found some dreaded news out this afternoon..... Was at my brother's shop just checking out my sway bar bushings when I noticed something odd. It looked like a soup can lid hanging down. (let me mention that my truck has been under coated and everything is black) when i started poking around its the dreaded floor pan rot. I can touch carpet from the out side on the drivers side. Passenger side is not noticable from the outside. With my head hung low I am going to go order some floor pans....

I figured it was coming when I ripped the carpet up but i was hoping it was not going to be this bad. :wall:

FINALLY got my truck back last week. Only 2 1/2 months and a few thousand dollars later but man was it worth it. Such a huge change from 3.07 on 33's to 4.56 gears. I actually put the truck in 5th gear. I have never had a truck with all 4 wheels locked. 4 wheel low I do believe it would climb trees now. I did get to put it to work this weekend. She hauled 4 loads of mulch and a playhouse for my daughters second birthday. I thought I had a fuel pump going bad but come to find out when my tank says its only 1/4 full its actually empty. Found that out the hard way on a trip to get mulch. Over all I am very happy with how things are turning out. And I finally am getting this big a$$ bumper outta my office and on the truck. I'll upload some pictures when I get home tonight.

Can't wait to see the bumper on. I love ARB bumpers. Some people hate them but the one I had on my 98 xj survived a wreck at 25 mph with barely a scratch. I also hit a deer doing 60 and nothing. Its gonna look sick. Great build man.

Thanks a bunch man!!!!  Yeah I really like the look of the bumper too. Got a Smittybuild XRC 10 to stick on the bumper. Just wondering if I am going to have to buy new coil springs up front to support the weight of the bumper and winch. Close to 200 extra pounds. I have some pictures I meant to upload last night. But life at home with a 2 year old and a new play house out side.... Well lets just say she kept me busy till bed time last night. Ill try to get around to getting them up tonight.

Some people were asking about MPG with 33 x 12.50 and 4.56 gears. It looks like I am getting around 16 MPG. That is a mix of highway and in town driving.

Few more pictures of the Comanche doing work.

The start of a "half day vacation from my real job"

Loaded down with 35 retaining wall block

After 4 loads of mulch in the back. All those block and a butt load of digging here is the results.  Still have to cap the fire pit and pea gravel but thanks to the Comanche we are making progress.

Got the bumper installed but the winch will not fit. Gonna have to break down and get a Warn I guess. I got a good deal on the XRC10 for 125.00 and hate to pass it up though. Also looks like the RMS is still leaking. We got in it yesterday with lights and looked it over for a  good 30 minutes, cleaned it up on the bottom real good, fired it up and drip, drip. So, Mr. Mechanic has a RMS to do on his money this time. Will post some pictures this evening when I get home of the manche with its new bumper on. I think it looks good.

So here is how the project will go from here.

Get that RMS fixed and all the leaking gone. I cannot stand a leaking truck.

Drive it..... I have been without it for about 3 months and I plan on driving the hell outta it. All this dag on money in it I am going to drive it. . :MJ 1: .

This fall after I save a little money the floor pans will be next on the big projects. I really have to find someone around here I can trust to do the work and not rip me a new one. While doing this I want so swich over to buckets too. Depending on how money looks I may just stick with my bench. Its pretty comfortable. ;)

Then spray in bed liner and some BW flares.

This will keep me broke for the next 6 to 8 months I am sure.
