lamart72 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 <p>I've been starting to hear a growling noise in the rear of my 02 GC as I brake and I think this might be the problem. I have the parking brake on in the video so that I can check the play in the rear pinion without moving the axle shafts. What do you think? Is this too much play?
Alexia Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Looks fine to me, but best to open it up to inspect the gear faces.
MJCARENA Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Looks like it has a lot of play to me. Do you have a locker, like a Lock-Rite installed? Those have some play in them.
87manche1 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 gotta watch, seen quite a few grand cherokees with burnt rearends like whole end on fire. I'm trying to find an article but its difficult on a phone. Something about the vent tube clogging overheating the fluid and bearings causing fire.
cruiser54 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Appears fine. Pop the cover and inspect the gears to be sure.
Bounty Hunter Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Looks pretty normal to me. Grand Cherokee's are notorious for eating bearings in the rear axles, especially the d44a. You'll likely need the entire axle rebuilt.
