<p>I've been starting to hear a growling noise in the rear of my 02 GC as I brake and I think this might be the problem. I have the parking brake on in the video so that I can check the play in the rear pinion without moving the axle shafts. What do you think? Is this too much play?

gotta watch, seen quite a few grand cherokees with burnt rearends like whole end on fire.

I'm trying to find an article but its difficult on a phone. Something about the vent tube clogging overheating the fluid and bearings causing fire.

Looks pretty normal to me.

Grand Cherokee's are notorious for eating bearings in the rear axles, especially the d44a.  You'll likely need the entire axle rebuilt.
