Your best bet is to find one from no later than a '90 XJ/MJ and swap that in.  You'll need the sending units from the same Jeep.  Other than that, you can bring it to a shop and have the mileage dialed in to the exact same as your current cluster to keep it legal.

Thanks, so far all I have seen have been 91 and newer. Didn't think about the mileage, will do that when I find one. I think it's two Sending units that need swapped from what I read, the oil and temp.

I have IP'S with tach from '84, '85, and '86 XJ'S 2.5 and 2.8 engines.

I also have IP with tachs from '87 '88, '89 and '91 XJ, 2.5 and 4.0. None of them has a pot or anything else for adjustment that can be seen. I haven't torn into any of them to see if there's something on the inside. Also in neither the FSM for the 1986 and the 1989 XJ-MJ there is nothing about tach adjustment. The schematic just shows a wire from the ign module to the IP.

I'm wondering if the tachs themselves are made for each usage, meaning you need the tach made for that engine, number of cylinders. If so, then I see no reason a 2.8 and a 4.0 can't be interchanged. Perhaps some one with a parts manual, DON?, could check the numbers and come up with something.

I Believe so, don't have anything to back that up tho. I assumed 90 and older 6 would have been compatible. And the 4 would not have been accurate on my 2.8. I'll keep researching it.

Set the IP on your work bench. Remove the front plastic cover. On the back is 5 screws, 2 big ones and 3 little ones. Remove them.

There is also a screw on the lower right of the tach face. Remove it. Pull the tach out.Behind the tach is a circuit board with a pot on it. That pot is the adjustment. I can't post pics but if anyone wants one email me.

To calibrate the tach you will need some jumper wires and hook it back into the XJ circuit or if you have access to a power supply and signal generator use them.

For the 4 cyl 66.7 HZ=2000RPM. 166.7 HZ=5,000RPM

For the 6 cylinder 100HZ=2000RPM. 250HZ=5000RPM.

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I don't have access to a signal generator. I think I can get by using an o-scope or the hz function on the dvm. Sounds like I could have used the one from a 2.5.
