Motive Gear Performance Anyone?

Recommended Posts

I put a set in an LJ Rubicon for Darren ( formerly known as goblazers_6) , the gears were fine but I didnt care for thier install kits. They didnt seem to have enough different shims to make the combination I needed, lucky for me I have a bunch of leftover shim sets at the shop so it wasnt an issue.

Also IIRC they supplied Koyo bearings rather then Timken bearings.

But for the money they seemed like a good deal, he has been driving and wheeling with them for about a year now with no issues.

They have a good enough reputation. The thing about gears is that, according to research down by the owner of Northridge4x4, there are only about three foundries that make the gear seats. Then a bunch of companies that resell them. Any with cosmetic flaws get sold as the cheap brands and the perfect sets get sold as the expensive brands. With that said, I am installing two sets right now.

I found Koyo's installed from the factory on my 1988 HP D30, believe they were used when Dana orginally built the axles for AMC. The DANA OEM set up kits I bought came with plenty of shims, and Timken bearings. I didn't like the sharper radius on the back side of the Timken race. When you shim the carrier for final assy and pre-load, they would hang up on the corner edge and remove metal if you were not real careful. The Koyo's had a nice radius, would slip right in with a couple hits of the mallet.

You obviously wheel different terrain out west, because with 35 (and the stock 3.55 gears) I have broke probably well over 20 shafts and u joints, broke a supposedly pretty much unbreakable locker twice and grenaded two diffs. Oh, and ripped off a few control arm mounts as well.

Doesnt have anything to do with the terrain here, I don't know were he wheels but its probably not any of our OHV areas.

Another thing to keep in mind, he has also been talking on another thread about getting a front locker. Talk about D30 time bomb.

Haven't a had any probs so far or other buddy's runnin that big or bigger like 39.5 iroks seems to hold up so far and break a shaft got extras lol

Wait till you get a locker, it will put a lot more stress on things. Also keep in mind that the center section is the weakest link in your axle so if you start upgrading shafts and such your going to start stripping out ring gears.

If your set on 37s I would atleast go to a D44, it can be built to handle 37s and can accept a more suitable gear ratio.

Getting a tire bound up can break a shaft too.and you can't say you won't throttle into it,some situations require some wheel speed.

Your gonna have to crawl as much as possible and stay out of the rocks, my concern is a 4.88 isnt gonna be deep enough to do that without a 4.1:1 or a crawl box.

I have us standard gears 4.88s in my MJ, so far they have been fine.

Check this place, they had the best prices when I did mine.
