UNL1MTD
Long story shot, I got two Mjs now ... only took a week, I'm on the fast track. Well the one I want to fix up has a cracked windshield. Is it possible to take the windshield from the donor MJ and put it on the other MJ DIY? I typically just hire people to do windshield work, but I figure there was probably someone who has already done this. How is a windshield held into place on a MJ? How should I seal the windshield once its in place? Should I just pay someone to swap them? Should I just get a brand new one? -Sean
minydigger
I know around my parts you would be better off just having a new one put in. They will do it but will not guarantee that it will not break when they try to remove it. You can call a shop up and see what they say?
mjeff87
I put a winshield in, once, in a Chevy Citation.....I'll never do it again. How badly is it cracked (as in, can it be repaired in place)? I've had two small cracks/chips repaired on the MJ since I've owned it. "They" say if you can cover it with a dollar bill, it can be repaired. jeepthing07
I tried to remove the windshield on my parts XJ for a spare and i ended up breaking it
JeepcoMJ
yeah don't do it yourself. it won't work it'll crack and you'll be cussing up a storm. a new one is the best option.
UNL1MTD
thanks for the tips .. the crack goes the length of the windshield ... kinda horrible. I'll just get a new one right before inspection.
87manche
whn you get a new one, tell the glass guy tht you want the rubber gasket from the newer XJ's. It eliminates the metal trim, and the stupid plastic clips, and it's less prone to leakage problems. Not to mention it's easier to put in, so most glass guys are more than happy to accomodate. That sound about right for the VA area?
JeepcoMJ
you'd have to call and ask a windshield shop...it may vary upon shops or area. but call the one you intend to use and ask what the windshield plus labor would be.

That sound about right for the VA area? I've paid between $125 and $150, with the installer coming to my home and doing the job right in the driveway. If you convert to the new style perimeter gasket, you'll have to be sure to tell him in advance so he'll bring the gasket, and the gasket will probably cost an extra $25 or so. HOrnbrod
I had a similar problem awhile ago and had an installed good spare. The glass companies wouldn't touch pulling the spare. I tried to remove it myself, and of course ended up breaking it. So my auto insurance took care of replacing it.
UNL1MTD
I'm nearing Inspection and I have been getting quotes in my area for a new Windshield. Best price is 165.00 so far. Normal Price is 180.00. Only one company is willing to install the new XJ style gasket and that'll run another 40. All quotes include them coming to me and installing it in my driveway. So I guess I'm trying to gauge if the newer gasket is really worth that money. Its either 165 for a new windshield. or 220 for a new windshield and XJ rubber gasket. Whats everyones thoughts ... keep in mind its a 500 dollar truck.
Wildman
Keep in mind that most all windsheld companys guarantee there work, so I'd say, save the $40, and if the new one leaks, it on them. If the original lasted 17 years guled in with no leaks.......well. ;) Guest it just the option if you want the metal trim, or not.
mjeff87
Try calling Safelite (if you haven't already). I got a huge chip in my MJ glass two winters ago, and they quoted me somewhere around $150 IIRC. I didn't get it replaced, though, because I was worried about getting a new piece of glass to seal on a 20 year old truck.....I opted to have them repair it, for around $30 (and a lifetime guarantee that if it ever cracked, they would do a full replacement at no cost). Jeff This panned out. Online qutoe was 175. Talking to the guy I got it for 144, just have to wait until Monday. I was hoping to have the Comanche inspected and on the road by Saturday, but saving money is more important then time right now. Highest quote I got was 247. That's just crazy high.
