Locker Question

Recommended Posts

So I am finally tierd of the one wheel peel. So I was looking at locker and looked at the assuie and was wondering if it does ok on the road I daily drive my jeep. So would the locker have more chance of breaking on mostly road driving. Also could I do 2 wheel burnout on pavement.

Any comments are appreciated

The front one is invisible in 2wd so its fine on the road. The rear one takes some getting use to.

Selectible lockers would be best on the road but they are not in everybody's budget.

Yes it will burn both tires on pavement .

Just doing normal driving does it cause more wear to your tires than open diff

The rear will.

When you go around a corner you have to let off the throttle to unlock the locker, this isnt always possible so you end up dragging a tire sometimes.

You just figure anytime one tire has to spin faster then the other it won't always be able to and you will get some tire wear.

If you drive on the road a lot you probably want an LSD rather then an auto locker. Unless you can afford selectable lockers which can be turned on and off manualy.

Sorry I don't know much about lockers just hit me while off roading today that the open diff has to go. PS I checked out your build thread very nice

I had a lunch box locker in my old 35 on 31" rubbers and it was definitely a life changing experience ! The tires wore faster and made a lot of extra noise in parking lots etc.... It didn't help that at that time I was a teenager and liked all that extra racket ( come to think of it I still do) . The most fun was when it would "unload" for no particular reason wile driving down the highway , sometimes causing it to change lanes at will ! However , through all the extra fun it did its job and did it cheap and that was the goal at the time . I've been told that automatics and longer wheelbases lessen the "troubles" previously mentioned along with more sensible driving habits but I digress . I'm currently running a Detroit out back on 35" and have little to complain about and if I had to do it all over again ( assuming the same financial situation ) I probably would do it all again . Remember if you go this route you can easily go back if not satisfied .

If you have a D44 rear,

I'd put the locker there.

If you have a D35 rear,

I'd run the bigger Ujoints in the front axle

do full circle clips if possible,

and I'd run the locker up front.

Rear lockers pop and bang when they feel like it,

won't make a noise for a week,

then BANG! like you blew it up lol.

Spools are more consistent, and quieter, once you get the tire pressure & screeching figured out.

But they wear your tires like someone hit them with a belt sander at a funny angle,

and I'm not sure how even a D44 would like the constant stress of long term street driving around corners with a spool.

(Probably ok if you weren't carrying so much weight that the tires can't slip, and scrub off some of the difference of distance traveled around corners)

I've been running a Powertrax Lockrite locker in the D35 and a Powertrax No-slip in the D30 of my '97 TJ since 2001. They have 120,000 miles on them and no problems what so ever. You get a clicking noise out of the rear in parking lots at times which is normal. The rear gets some getting used to on pavement on city street 90 degree corners. I usually just put the clutch in and coast around the corner vs light power which tends to spin one tire so increased wear from that aspect. I get 40,000-60,000 miles out of a set of tires depending on who's they are. The front locker is totally invisible and absolutely quiet on pavement. Running both ends locked on ice and hard packed snow in 4wd is hairy to say the least. I have a had Lockrite in the D44 (rear) in the MJ for a year now and it reacts the same as in my TJ. Just my experiences. Hope it is useful.
