I have been having an issue with my speedometer. It will work wonderfully about half of the time...the other half it rests at 0. Sometimes the issue will fix itself in the middle of driving it, and it will just magically start working again. This does not effect the odometer. I've got a 1989 Jeep Comanche Eliminator. Thanks!

Two places to check first are the both ends of the cable. I've experienced a broken connection at the back of the cluster and also a loose connection at the transmission. If you need slack to pull the cluster, there is a hold-down on the cable about half way between trans and firewall.

By does not effect the odometer, do you mean the odometer keeps registering miles when the speedometer is not working?

Correct. Odometer registers miles when the speed is not functioning. Verified.

Yeah, if the odometer is working, the cable and drive gear at the lower end are okay. The problem has to be in the speedo head itself.
