Finally, A Job !

I am about to embark on a new career.

I will now be a car salesman at a really nice dealership.

GM and Chrysler.

I always thought I'd be good at it, but didn't want to take the chance to try it because I have always had a pretty good job.

Well, after 6 months of unemployment, I took a class at a dealership and passed all the tests and interviews. (I was the only one)

I start Monday.

Wish me luck.

If anyone in the southern Indiana area needs a car, give me a shout.

Mike.

Ive never had a good experience with a car salesman. I hope you can turn that image around for some people. I know they have a job to do, and with the way it works you have to do what you can to close the deal.... just it leaves a bad taste in my mouth most times. Thats the reason Ive never wanted to do that job. I'm a dealer tech at a Chrysler and Mazda dealership, and I wouldnt trust any of the people we have as far as I can throw them. There was one guy, but hes gone now. Good luck!

Congrats! I hope it's a salaried position and it isn't entirely commission-based...that would be too much pressure for me to handle.

I'm with dasbulliwagen - I've never met a new or used car/truck/motorcycle salesman that I despised. All I want is for them to level with me, talk to me like a normal human being and not be in "salesman" mode 100% of the time. When I was looking for a motorcycle, I stopped by a couple of dealerships and I thought I found a salesman that wasn't a pre-programmed human robot designed to spout off sales pitches whenever he could. I wasn't even really all the interested in buying a brand new bike, but this guy seemed like a pretty cool cat. We talked motorcycles and cars for a bit and right when I expressed interest that I might want to lay down some cash and leave the store with a bike, he did a complete 180 - out came the cliches and blatantly obvious sales tactics. He started trying to sell me on a $1000 warranty package and wouldn't STFU about their low APR financing plans and how I could be riding home in only 40 minutes. I finally interrupted him and told him I had changed my mind and walked out the door. I had given him a business card back when he was cool and he kept calling me at work for the next few weeks - persistent bastard. If he would have realized that I don't fall for cheap, gimmicky sales tactics, he would have had the sale.

I agree with some of you on the "Salesman" persona. They definitely have a bad rep.

I have dealt with several of them over the years and didn't like most. I have liked a couple of them.

That personality is not me. I will have to try to sell, though.

We'll see how it goes. It is salary while in training but then commission from there on.

I'm doing it because:

1. I was unemployed.

2. I like to talk to people.

3. I love cars.

If anyone is in southern IN that needs a car, let me know.

My wife is wanting a fully loaded FJ cruiser, 4-runner limited or possibly a land cruiser brand new or slightly used. If you come accross a good deal and can ship it to West Texas, let me know. She's been driving my Rubicon until she finds one. She's falling in love with the rubi, and that scares me.

Congrats!

I've been thinking about doing the same. The local Chrysler place has ads out to hire salesman that don't have any car sales experience. I would never give a pitch though and I wouldn't need any training. I would just start gabbing about the awesomeness of Jeeps. They sell themselves.
