JeepFanactic
I been interested in getting a MJ for awhile preferably in 4wd. Which year, engine and transmission should I be looking for? Want to start out on a solid platform?
Dadinator
They are all good. 4.0L inline six is the best engine. AX-15 is the best manual (5 sp) AW4 is the auto of choice. Look for Rust. Good Luck

MJRemi
AX15 is from mid 89-92 for 4.0L and the AW4 is from 86 or 87-92.
glundblad
I will probably get flamed but the least desirable year is probably 1986 with the V6 engine... I will keep my head down for saying it.
mvusse
Definitely go with a 4.0 which was available starting in 87. If you get a stick shift, got a late 89 or newer because the Puegeot trans is garbage.
87MJTIM
the Puegeot trans is garbage. I agree. My BA10 is 25 yrs old. Got me 268000 miles. It has never left me stranded or had any work done to it. I change the gear oil for the first time last Sept. Of course, your results may vary. (tounge in cheek. Please don't bash me. Not all of them were bad.)

The BA10/5 makes all kinds of fun noises sometimes, but Ive had a 2wd and 4wd Peugeot tranny and neither have left me stranded. The clutch is a piece though. jimoshel
The only reason people put down the 2.8 V6 is because they can't count past 4. They make one trip to the auto parts store to get 4 plugs for the right bank and then have to go back and get 4 more for the other bank. Blaming an inanimate object, the 2.8 for their own lack of mathematical education.
