AW-100
My MJ has no 4x4 light. Is it an electrical switch on the transfer, or is it vacuum operated, and where do I find the switch? I believe it to be a 207 transfer, as it is a 1986 2,5 with AX-4 and part time 4x4. The CAD has been welded, and the vacuum lines to the axle has been plugged. jimoshel
Unless a PO swapped something you have a 207, Command Trac or a 228, Select trac. The electrical switch is on the left hand side of the TC.
87Warrior
Actually, I believe the light is operated by a vacuum switch. It should be located on the back side of the passenger side inner fender near the blower motor.
jimoshel
You are correct. That's what i get for making a rash decision before the 2nd cup of coffee. 207 vacuum switch. No electric.
AW-100
This litle blue thingy in the lower corner? -yeah, I do have some wiring to sort out...
skidoo_j
This litle blue thingy in the lower corner? -yeah, I do have some wiring to sort out... Correct, it's a Normally open switch to ground. When under vacuum it closes completing the circuit. With a welded cad if you're wanting the light you need to find an electric switch that attaches at the vacuum port on the transfer and replaces with with an electric switch. AW-100
Can I connect some of the plugged vacuum lines at the CAD to get vacuum to the switch again?
skidoo_j
Can I connect some of the plugged vacuum lines at the CAD to get vacuum to the switch again? It may be possible to run a vacuum line from the current switch directly to the light switch, trial and error i guess. the switch activates under vacuum so i'm sure it could be done. IIRc there is a schematic of the actuation in the diy pics forum. I'm sure you'll need to plug some of the ports on the back of the transfer, or maybe just use some tees etc. I'd assume an electric switch would be easier to swap and wire then to figure out the cluster of vacuum hoses. jimoshel
Might check a Chevy S10. They have an electrical switch attached to the shift lever.
ftpiercecracker1
I had the same idea, why couldnt some kind of simple electrical switch be rigged up to turn on the 4X4 light when you pull the lever?
skidoo_j
I had the same idea, why couldnt some kind of simple electrical switch be rigged up to turn on the 4X4 light when you pull the lever? you could do a normally closed switch that is held open when in 2x4, then when you shifted up it would close and turn on the light, but it would show 4x4 when the transfer was in Neutral that way. You could wire two normally open switches parallel mounting one at 4h and one at 4l some how. still think locating the switch at back of transfer would be less headache. ftpiercecracker1
still think locating the switch at back of transfer would be less headache. Probably. When i did the CAD fix i left all the vacuum system in place, at least until a few months ago, but thankfully i was smart enough to keep the hole system, intact in one totally reuseable piece. I am thinking i can figure some way of running a single line specifically for the 4X4 vacuum operated light, we will see.
Lewt2007
but what do you do if the transfer case doesn't have a place for the vacuum switch and is out of a later year cherokee
mvusse
Then you tie the bulb directly into the electrical switch on the transfer case that is specifically for that light. Hot to bulb to switch.
skidoo_j
recently removed the vacuum switch on a 241 and replaced it with an electric switch to control the 4x4 light on my fathers dodge that we removed cad from. From my research a 231 would use the same threads so either of these two switches should work. 600551 is normally open, where 600-506 is closed. it depends on when the bearing on the vacuum got depressed in 4x4 (norm open) or when in 2x4 (closed ref to switch). I bought both for the dodge with the 241 and it ended up being 600-551. Right now i'm running my cad with a posiloc and it has it's own switch, but if i eliminate it I will be converting to the transfer case controlled switch.
