Recommended Posts

Just got my bros old s10 blazer 4x4 back (tbi4.3 700r4 231tc). now I'm gona do 1 of 2 things either swap out the 2.8 ax5 207 thats in it and finagle the blazer stuff in , but theres alot of wiring and junk to keep all of the fuel infection working and i hate wiring. Or i can sell it and use the money to buy a GM HT 3.4 crate motor and keep the manual trans wich i like better, o ya and i aint got alota time on my hands these days due the new born in the house so my wrenching time has been cut short , wata yal think.

I'm not a GM fan but anythings better than a 2.8. Why not just get a 3.4 from a camaro? You could probably get one for next to nothing. I personaly wouldent waste time on a 4.3 swap, just go 4.0

agreed.

but what exactly is it you have? a s10 blazer with a 2.8? TBI then if that's the case...

the 3.4 camaro will bolt up to the tranny and motor mounts no problem. you can keep the 3.4 FI if you want. what you then have to do is get the entire engine compartment harness from the camaro and lay down that and run it along with the stock harness. (do this :hateputers: to the3.4 computer if you don't want that)

or get the 3.4 from the camaro, swap the intakes and accessories, and bolt it back up to the truck as a higher bore engine. Don't mess with the 4.3...they're not really that great and the injection pieces would all need to be replaced to make it reliable (plastic hoses in the intake crack etc. and are a b@#$h to replace.

If you want to go with a 3.4 and want to keep the camaro FI and wiring, the wiring could be done for somewhere around 300 dollars, or you would spend about 30 dollars on a passkey bypass module (so the injectors would work), made by bakerelectronix, and another 30 at most on all the wires/crimps you would need.

I put a 3.8 camaro in my MJ and the wiring was actually pretty darned simple! but then again i love wiring :D

I'm sorry i have a 2.8 in the manche and want to swap the 4.3 in to it, and it dosnt have the plastic intake setup it is TBI not MPFI . also the 4.3 is not that bad it is basicly v8 minus 2 cyl , puts out a consideral amount of power , reliable, parts are plenty and its not a 2.8 . and i live in califorina so every thing i do as far as an engine swap goes has to be inspected by the smog nazies then it gets a stamp of aproval if the swap was done to their specs.

as far as swap n in the 4.0, i would but i don't have a 4.0 i have a 4.3 in a blazer, complete runing and driving.

put the 3.4 in, with the camaro FI, and do the wiring on it. I can send you pdf files on everything you would need to know on connector views and wiring for that engine, you just need to let me know the year.

otherwise put your 4.3 in, but find a 5 speed and flywheel. you'll be sorry if you go auto. (i can get you a 5 speed 4wd 4.3/chevy 350 trans. for cheap, just shipping would be the problem. no rear driveshaft). I'm certain I can get you the diagrams on the 4.3 as well, thanks to alldatapro.com :D.

whatever you do for a swap, you need the ENTIRE wiring harness of the vehicle. otherwise you're screwed.

and if you go with the camaro engine, i can get you pics of the 3.8 conversion i did...more difficult than the 3.4 but the wiring is generally located the same way, and similar in coloring.

id like to keep the 5 speed i got but the bellhousing from advanced adp

costs bout 500 bucks then the flywheel was like 1 er 2 hundo and u gota

run a special 10.5 clutch disk along with their slave cyl ...ect. butmy

budy said he would give me an sm465 /fly wheel and a divorced ford 205,

but thats alota dern weight so i don't no. i gues the auto box will be ok with a good shift kit.

No doubt the 3.4 would be an easier swap. But it's not gonna put out the power of the 4.3. But the 3.4 has the stick. But the 4.3 has fuel injection.

I'd say your choice is really -power- vs. -time to install-.

she is right. either way though, it's gonna be more powerful and get better mileage than a 3.4

You could also put in a 3.8 camaro engine. http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3582

that's the link to my MJ project with the 3.8 conversion. I kept my 5 speed, and it has more horsepower and torque than a 4.0 HO motor...stock! I'm not sure what kind of work you would have to do to a 4.3 exhaust to get it to fit...but i do know a 3.8 you have to custom make the headers. and a 3.4 you just reuse the 2.8's.

personally I would swap a 4.0 in before a 4.3 any day. the 4.3 really isn't that great of an engine.

*he, but it's okay, the name throws ppl off on every corner.

Most hardcore Jeep guys seem to get angry of a 4.3 swap as well because they feel that the 4.0L > 4.3L!!!1!11! But you wouldn't be swapping a 4.0 in anyways since you have the 4.3 so...

the 2.8 and 4.3 are pretty much the same motor( i think don't quote me on that) u *could* put the block heads in there w/ the carbd intake off the 2.8. it should bolt to the trans/tcase also.

I'm pretty certain that the 2.8L is a 60 degree motor and the 4.3L is a 90 degree motor. The 4.3L is the V-8 minus 2 cylinders, and the 2.8 is not.

The 2.8 and 3.4 are pretty much the same motor. The 4.3 is very different.

If it was my truck I'd sell the drivetrain and get a 3.4L.

NEVER tell anyone to keep that POS carb off a 2.8!!!!!!!

2.8 and 3.4 are the same with a different stroke and a few minor differences. (60 degree motors)

the 4.3 and chevy 350 are the same, except for the difference in 2 cylinders.

aaaand the 3.8 is in a class all of it's own...it's a 90 degree motor BUT has a 60 degree (i.e. the same as a 2.8 or 3.4) bellhousing pattern.

SO if you want the most power and a stock ax5 trans, go with a 3.8. if you want simple, still more power, and better gas mileage WHILE still retaining your 5 speed, go with a 3.4. if you want a whole sh*t ton more power, with an auto trans, put in the 4.3 you have now. next option is 4.3 with a 5 speed trans.

and last option, cheapest (in the short run) option, is to say screw it.

It depends which 3.8L you get. The 229 is Chev V8 patterned. The 231 is BOP patterned. Gotta watch out for that as neither have 60 degree.

Sorry, I should clarify. I said the 3.8 from the 1996 Camaro. That's a Buick motor, which IS a 60 degree setup. with no air conditioner on it, and custom motor mounts and headers, it's a simple enough system. I can give anyone the specs on mine if they'd like.

and sorry Kassidy, no cruel intentions meant with the gender mixup!

No offense taken!

Any thoughts on any of this 86FUBAR?

Well keeping the stock 2.8 is out of course / i do like the idea of the 3.4

swap caus then i can get the edelbrock intake and headers iv been drooln

over fer a long time , keep the 5 speed and save some time n money but

that means i have to keep the crappy carb. i know webber has their carb

fer it but its not smog legal .

the 3.8 is out / cool idea though

swapn in the 4.3 is probably the best thing to do but since i lack in time these days it might not be the best thing , i just like to chew on many ideas befor desiding so as not to regret it later.

I'm gona see if i can run a carb setup on the 4.3 insted of the FI just to save some time , i still have to do some more research thought .

pleas keep thrown out ideas I'm soaking every thing up like a sponge.

And as far as the gender bender, ur name threw me off to sorry.

86FUBAR, do the 3.4. i know you don't like wiring, but the FI is probably the BEST way to go...runs much smoother and in many more angles (upside down for instance :D )

If not, then here's some info for you.

this is the site to get the edelbrock intake from. if you go that way, buy the 4v (4 barrel) one, and get a holley 390 cfm carburator. you'll spend 600 bucks on all that probably, but trust me it will be worth it...the whole point of the swap is to get rid of the vaccuum 2 barrel carb...swapping to a 3.4 will do no good if you keep that carb.

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/man_sbchev.html

this sight has a great writeup on the swap,

http://www.off-road.com/jeep/cherokee/x ... 4swap.html

and this one.

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl= ... n%26sa%3DN

this one is in-depth about everything, with pictures too.

http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Pro ... ect_XJ.htm

I have all of these from when I was gonna do a 3.4 swap to replace my 2.8. then i found the 3.8 and decided on that instead.

If you want to do the 3.4, buy a junk car or get an engine with complete wire harness and engine computer, you'll need some of the wiring regardless of whether or not you go FI.

now here's the kicker, I CAN get you ANY wiring diagrams you would need if you decide to do the fuel injection. keep that in mind. the wiring is real similar to my 3.8, and I believe the only thing you would have to purchase is that passkey bypass from BAKERELECTRONICs.com.

let me know if you need any info, i'll be checkin on it!
