Ok, I know there are a few members here who make some extra cash fixing and flipping wrecked xjs. Well my buddys sister wrecked her 00 a few weeks back and my buddy decided to fix it and make it his DD. The jeep is in awesome shape, just needed two fenders, bumper and a header and a hood after the insurance company got a hold of it. He got all the parts including the radiator and air bags to fix it. our only question was, do you just hook the airbags back up? do you have to reset the computer or anything? both bags went out in the wreck and he bought used bags out of another jeep, just looking for some help to get her back on the road! :wrench:

thats what I suggested, He is mainly scared of hooking the new bags up and then hooking the battery up and them going off because of it not being reset. We would like to stay away from the dealership if possible

We put both new bags in as well as the module on the floor. fired it up and nothing blew thankfully, but the airbag light is on. We will have to investigate further as to why that is. On another note we got the new front clip primed as well as the radiator in :wrench: paint and a windshield and shes ready to go!

Yep usually after an accident the module will need replaced with the bags. It does its job once and thats it.

And when the new one is installed they usually need to code it for what the vehicle is so it knows what to do. hence the reason camjeep3's light is on.

Replace the bags and module and drop it off at the dealer for recode/clear module.

The airbag computer DOES NOT need to be replaced on the XJ. Just hookup new airbags, very often the clockspring squib will melt to the airbag, if it does you need to replace the clockspring.

I don't think the Xj airbag computer stores the VIN to do a vin check against the ECM, but it might be worth putting back in the original airbag computer to make sure there is not vin mismatch problems.

My '97 donor had been in a front end collision recently before I bought it. The PO had purchased new airbags, but hadn't connected them and the light was on. After swapping in a new module (it was $10 off ebay) and clock spring, I connected the air bags and haven't had any issues since.

Thanks sam. your expertise is what I was looking for. I told my friend what you said and he is worried the old computer will make the bags deploy, Oh well. we will figure it out

He doesn't need to worry, I have done it dozens of times. The airbag computer does not need to be replaced.
