Paul Bruchal Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I have a 1990 Jeep Comanche Eliminator with the I6, 5 speed, 4wd, dana 35. I would like to swap a dana 44 in someday and i'd like to have the same gear ratio as the front dana 30. Is there a certain gear ratio for my model? Eliminator?
mvusse Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 4.0/5 speed should have come from the factory with 3.07 gears. Only way to tell for sure is to pull the cover and either count the teeth or read the stampings in the edge of the ring gear.
MancheKid86 Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Jack up rear end, Rotate tire one rotation, Count number of rotations of drive shaft
Geonovast Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Jack up rear end,Rotate tire one rotation, Count number of rotations of drive shaft  This only works if you have a LSD or locked rear end. If the rear axle is open, you need to jack up one rear tire, leave the other on the ground, and rotate the wheel twice.
Pete M Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 I would use this as an opportunity to upgrade the ratios. 3.55s are VERY common in XJs and so if you can get a 44 with 3.55s, it's a snap to swap out the front axle as well. you'll be happier with the 3.55s. I promise.
