Eagle
It can easily be engaged manually. Just pop the cover off the disconnect housing and engage the sliding collar. It can be shimmed in place using large washers, or even a hose clamp. Close up the housing and just pretend you have a one-piece right side shaft. Be sure to plug your vacuum tubes, though. comanchedude
You know you can just tap into the vacuum line under the hood (line coming from vacuum canister) If you want it engaged all the time and you won’t have to make any modifications to the unit If having it engaged all the time is what you want

jeepaholic
let me revoke that last post..now that i have had a shower and a cup of joe  By sliding the piece over manually it is simply creating the link in the 2pc shaft right? 4x4 is still eng/diseng by the transfer case..What about pulling the guts out of the vac disco and installing a shaft out of a stanard d30 non disco...Will that work too. Just seems that the connection point of the 2 shafts is going to be a weak point.
mjeff87
You can do that as well (and get new shafts with the 297X joints in them), but you have to pull the carrier and install an inner seal inside the housing, and make up a cover plate for the CAD housing. I've had mine shimmed over with washers for 3+ years now without a problem. Jeff
GirsMJ86
you will find out that most people have done this fix and never bother going any further with it. a lot of times it is done if there is a vac leak and it won't engage unless you track down the vac leak and fix it, which most people do not want to do. it is still engaged and disengaged from the t-case and that point in the axle is no weaker then it was when it would slide over by vac from the factory. and it actually might be considered stronger then that since it is not relying on vac to hold it over. this just makes sure that it will not get knocked out of 4wd if something was to happen to those vac lines. if anything, do it until you can track down some solid axle shafts with the newer joints or a selsc-trac d30. and that is why we are here, to help each other out and i tried to do that when i did this fix. my truck is a street truck most the time also and i have had no problems since doing it.
