jeepaholic Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007  Ok i am beating a dead horse i know..I have a abundance of rear ends here..Currently running the 8.25 3.55 gear..Pulled that..Was given an 8.8 4.10 w/ locker(problem is its a 2000 ranger)..Wanted the 8.8 out of the explorer..Found one but have 2 questions...1) Does it matter if it is a V6 or V8 Explorer...2) Does the 3.73 and the 4.10 use the same carrier..Promise this is the last axle question from me. :dunce:
87manche Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 the only differnece is some bracketry on the axle, 6 or 8 it's still the same housing/shafts/brakes. I don't believe there is a carrier break, I know that my brother just put 4.56's on his 3.73 carrier
Pete M Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 please read rule #2... http://comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1239
jeepaholic Posted February 5, 2007 Author Posted February 5, 2007 gotcha...won't let that happen again..I just figured everyone was gettin tired of my axle questions..I should have this thang rolling by this weekend I will post pics of my sleevin/trussin job of the d30 by this weekend. Trying some new things. If they work i have a 2nd mj to do it to also.
DirtyComanche Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Are you planning to use the 4.10 gears from the ranger in the exploder rear? That should work; but be aware that you'll have to make the new pattern match the old one on setup or they'll whine and possible explode. And yes, the V6/V8 8.8 is identical. IF you have to buy parts for it keep in mind they are AFIK all identical regardless of any options. So when the parts boy starts asking you for the interior colour and if it had cruise control give him a few choice words in response.
jeepaholic Posted February 6, 2007 Author Posted February 6, 2007 No the plan is for now to find a d30 4.10 for the front...I am gonna run the ranger rear w/locker until i find a exploder 8.8 w/4.10....The salvage yards down here are on the crack pipe  ..$300-400 they want for the d30 and  $600 for the 8.8...Keep in mind i bought the whole truck for 500 bones.
pingpong Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 For that price you need to make a run to VA, and hit the local pick a parts. You can get the whole thing for 110... less if you bring a junk axle with you. The 4.10 thing.... keep an eye out... there is some one always upgrading axles, or going deeper... you just have to be patient
jeepaholic Posted February 6, 2007 Author Posted February 6, 2007 Thats what i am thinkin..Patience is why i am gonna run the 8.8 ranger rear i got..Its 4.10 w/locker...Yeah i know its 1 1/2" to narrow but thats how chevy's use to be from the factory...Plus it was free. Shouldnt look too bad just being 3/4 in each side.
mjeff87 Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 ..Promise this is the last axle question from me. :dunce: Just for that, you get this...... ;)
randimal Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 3/4 inch could be easily fixed with an aluminum spacer. You can get them on ebay for 50 bucks a pair.
DirtyComanche Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 A slight curiosity... Is the ranger rear narrower than the exploder? Because if it is 1.5" too narrow(relative to the exploder), that would put it at about 58" wide. I ran 1.25" spacers on my exploder 8.8... It was the same width as the D30 that way (61"). If I didn't, I was going to be rubbing some serious frame.
jeepaholic Posted February 6, 2007 Author Posted February 6, 2007 I don't know in comparison to the exploder..But it is 1.5 narrower than the 8.25 I have.
87manche Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I believe the only difference in the ranger/exploder axles was the axleshaft. AFAIK the housings are the same.
jeepaholic Posted February 6, 2007 Author Posted February 6, 2007 I don't know bout that but since its the right gear...can make it fit my MJ...and it was free.....I'm gonna drive it like i stole it until it breaks, explodes, catches on fire, or whatever.
