I really need to get the w/w working in my 4x4. I've been too lazy to try to figure it out. Thought I'd ask for ideas.

History: didn't work when I bought the truck. Bought a universal unit, that wouldn't work. If you jump either unit straight to battery, they both work. So, for some reason, I'm not getting enough voltage through the hot wire. Never run into anything like this before. Anybody have an idea what could be cutting down the voltage or have any suggestions for a new source of power? Other than an add on switch. TIA

The switch is sending power, but not enough to operate the pump, but I didn't check the voltage with a volt meter, I just checked it with a test light. Something is cutting down the voltage. I am beginning to think I need to replace the multi-function switch on the column.

Well, that's easy enough to do, but I would clean the pump connector contacts, then measure the voltage at the pump first. Could be just corrosion at the connector. Might save some $$.

invesitage the black box under the dash that the wiper plug from the stalk plugs into.

It's the intermittent module, and it also controls the windshiled washer pump.

Yes, works on the 2wd, Need it on the 4wd, it's usually covered in mud.

Thats a good simple idea. I replaced the one on the 2wd and got 2 extras at the pull a part, so I'll try that first. That could be dropping the voltage.

Worst case, add a relay. If the lead coming from the switch puts out enough to operate the relay, then you'll get full power to the pump motor. If that doesn't work, then just add a toggle switch to operate the relay.

Years ago (thinking back to an Escort I once drove that had this "feature") I routed power to the washer pump directly to a separate switch. This allows me to soak the windshield before turning on the wipers so I'm not dragging the dry wipers across the dirt/salt/etc for the first pass. As an added benefit, the pump now works better because the new wiring provides better voltage. :D

 

Also, this summer I'll be installing an XJ washer pump with the dual pumps (one for the XJ rear window). I'll wire up the pump to another switch and somehow route the piping up to the windshield so I can quickly double the amount of water hitting the glass. It's not like I think I need it for lots of mud, but it's just another one of those ideas I had that I feel the need to bring to fruition, just for the hell of it. :D

mine has a double pump resovoir in it.

One pump runs out before the other, so it's going to the passenger side of the window.

wait, pete, you mention dry wipers over glass. Ive got a little tab on my MJ that you push for the washer fluid, the wiper controls are on the same stalk but seperate.

yes, but on mine the wipers start as soon as you push the tab, and it usually takes a few seconds for the pump to get fluid on the window.
